StarHotel a.k.a." HotelStay" Printed differently online and on the window sign Ideal location, bargain price Clearly run on a budget – rooms feature many updates – fresh paint, new bathroom tiles... ... But some obvious things weren’t there From the odd – screw-holes from where the hook used to be on the bathroom door and the sliding bolt-lock was on the room door. The "I Love You" bedding was a bit more personal than I would have preferred – to the bizarre– the flush handle of the toilet was missing – just a chunk of metal on the side of the cistern Fresh tiles, but obviously water damaged flat-pack shelf and old corroded plumbing hardware – to the probable code-violation of the smoke detector was missing – the mounting bracket and wiring was there, but the device itself gone I wasn’t bothered enough and my command of French and Asian languages was not good enough to complain, but they were odd oversights that suggested appearances were more important than basic substance
I stayed at a budget hotel before where the reviews were bad but my experience was great. This time was the opposite. The room was tiny and I'm only 5' tall 130 lbs. The place was clean but the walls were paper thin so I could hear everything that was going on outside. The tv didn't work, the A/C sometimes worked. There was plenty of hot water in the shower but there was no counter, just a narrow ledge over the sink. I worried I'd hit my head on it everytime I washed my face. My biggest concern was there was no way to lock the door from the inside, just a chain. The screen on the window had a huge hole in it so I couldn't leave the window open at night. The only good thing was the convenient location.
We stayed here last week as a family, the overall experience is much better than what we thought, we booked two rooms for two nights. First of all, the location is just amazing, you can reach everything around this area (metro station in 5 mins walk, supermarket in 15 mins). And the staff there are so nice and friendly. I think they have made a lot of progress, the room is clean and tidy. With this awesome price and location we highly recommend this hotel for your stay in Montreal.
Was quite worried about the quality of my stay due to the negative responses on this site - however, other trip sites had positive reviews and so I took a chance. Hotel is under new management, and quality of stay was very good. Wifi speed was fast, room was good enough for me, and service was very welcoming. Would come here again in the future.
This hotel was dirty and unkept. They only do maid service when you leave, and I'm not even certain how you get more towels. The shower had mold and was so disgusting I refused to use it. I have a mold allergy and coughed the whole trip. The furniture was decent (all IKEA) but our room was so dirty. Our balcony had trash on it. We wanted to leave before 10am and couldn't find a worker (we called the number and went to the room suggested on a note). Also don't be fooled, there is no free breakfast. They never put any food out, no coffee, nothing. Next time we will pay the extra money to have a decent stay in such a beautiful city. The statue in the photo below was the only decoration in the room...
Stayed here 2 years ago and it WAS basic but clean and adequate for the money. Now the name has changed to Hotel Star and the ownership and management appear to have NO interest in the property. The lobby is dirty. A grimey microwave and crumb encrusted toaster are next to a dirty, stained sofa which sit right in front of the reception desk. At check in a girl, behind a wall of safety glass, slid me a hand written check in agreement which also had all my credit card info written on it, INCLUDING my CVV #. When I asked about the lack of security regarding the credit card info, I was told " Don't worry sir, don't worry". Already feeling uncomfortable with the place and disappointed that it was not as good as my previous experience, I reluctantly went to my assigned room. I stank of smoke, although the entire hotel is supposed to be non smoking. The bedding was rumpled and stained, all surfaces looked as thought they had not been wiped down in a very long time. There was potato chips under the bed and little , creepy bugs crawling around! The bathroom had some loose change left in the shower and an already used, bar of soap left in the soap dish. I requested to switch rooms. The next room was worse ! There was even a pair of dirty socks and underwear in the bathroom vanity ! I demanded a refund due to the conditions of the rooms. I was denied a refund and told that everything I had issue with was " normal". Do NOT even consider staying here. I am following up with the Better Business Bureau and the City of Montreal Health department.
Where werent towels and bathrobe? If you behaved in the same way with all customers bathrooms arte new, sure! Ok be gentle but the primary service? Clean soso For one night its ok... But i payed more than what was wrote when i booked Wi-Fi is freme and the hotel is near the station
I picked this hotel to try to stay within my travel budget which was easily done. That being said it was difficult to get to at first since there wasn't any parking. Checking in was OK, and getting luggage upstairs wad manageable. The room is, just a room I didn't have my hopes up because I knew what I booked. However I was booking under the knowledge the hotel had air conditioning, what they don't say is its just in the hallway not your room, just a floor fan. Also be weary of the bar across the street as it gets rowdy late at night so be warned light sleepers. The hotel isn't horrible, honestly. Doubt I would stay again but on the positive side it's right next to The Village and everything can be reached by just hitting up the metro literally ft or m from the front door.
My boyfriend and I stayed at Hotel Centre-Ville for a weekend in July 2014. I had stayed in their sister hostel, Hotel Stay Mont-Royal, before and I liked it so we tried this location. The good: The staff are very friendly, and helpful. They stored our bags for check-out, and turned down the air-conditioning when it was too cold in our room. The complimentary breakfast is plentiful, with lots of options, in a little kitchen on the second floor. Location is very close to Rue St-Catherine, if you want to be right downtown. There is also a mini-fridge in every room. The not-so-good: The mattress was not very comfortable, as it dipped down in the middle. The sheets were VERY thin, as was the duvet. The noise from the street was loud, even with the window closed. The room just didn't seem the cleanest. For the price, it was good, but you get what you pay for.
Let me preface my review by saying I stay in budget hotels all the time. I cannot say enough bad things about this hotel. I would have given it a negative star if the option was available. 1: I stood outside for over 15 minutes (doors locked) until finally someone came down to let me in. 2: I requested a quiet room. I was told I was on the 3rd floor. This room was extremely noisy and faces the street which is busy. 3: The stairs are extremely steep and narrow and this is really a 4th floor. No help was offered with bags. No elevator. 4: The room doors do not relock . This is a big safety issue. Matter of fact, you have to open the door and check it from the outside to ensure it is locked. There is no other lock on the inside to ensure safety. (This is a basic 5.00 item at a hardware store.... 5: The hotel lists free local calls. Well, that is true however, you have to go the LOBBY to use the phone. No phones in the room. This again, is a basic but necessary safety issue. 6: The sink had all this white tape on the inside of the bowl covering up something. This is a sanitary issue. 7: The handle on the shower came off twice while I was using it. 8: No shampoo or conditioner. There is a soap dispenser in the wall of the shower only. 9: The A/C was OUT. I had to sleep on top of bed covers to attempt to sleep. Between the heat and the noise I hardly had any rest. (this is suppose to be a vacation) 10: Breakfast is sooo basic.. Coffee was horrid. Toast , peanut butter, and jam. Some yogurt. 11: No hair dryer, another basic need. 12: Towels are very very thin. I usually over look this but the whole experience was bad so I just went ahead and listed it. I requested to be moved to a quieter room but was denied indicating all rooms were booked. From what I can tell only 3 rooms in the hotel would be quiet (6,13,14 because they face opposite of the street. I requested to be let out of my contract and be refunded because they could not move me nor give me A/C. I was denied...... The owner is extremely rude. I stayed one night then booked another hotel. If you look on most travel sites this hotel lists "NO REFUND." Believe me there is a reason. The owner is NOT concerned about keeping customers happy. I figure he thinks people come to Montreal one time. This is my 5th time to this great city. Unfortunately, it is owners like this that give budget hotels a bad name. Yes, it is in a great location however, I encourage you to double check if you decide to gamble on this hotel hell.
