Arts and culture in Kobe

Put a little culture on your itinerary in Kobe. The exhibits at Hakutsuru Sake Brewery Museum, Disaster Reduction and Human Renovation Institution and Kobe Fashion Museum are good places to soak it in and do some people watching.

You can also learn a thing or two in Kobe — just dive into the books at Kinokuniya and Book-Off 2 Gokobenagata. The knowledge-filled halls and campus of Kobe Shoin Women's University, Kobe Tokiwa University and Kobe Tokiwa College may be worthy of a tour.

Get outdoors in Kobe

Not all of Kobe's attractions are indoors. Spend some time at Meriken Park. Visiting Minoo Hot Spring, too, is a good way to get outside.

Hotel Okura Kobe

Nice rooms with views and superb service

I’ve stayed at the Hotel Okura Kobe 7-8 times over the past 12 years as I find Kobe a delightful basing point to take vacations, relax and enjoy the Kansai area – which includes Kyoto and Osaka. On each occasion I’ve found the service to be superb and the room immaculate. While I cannot say I’ve stayed at all of what might be considered the nicest hotels in Kobe, I have stayed at the Meriken Park Oriental, Crowne Plaza ANA Kobe (adjacent to the Kobe Shinkansen Station), and the Hotel Crown Palais Kobe. Each of those hotels are nice but I prefer the Hotel Okura based on room condition (in particular condition of the carpets in the rooms), overall cleanliness and service. In saying my intent is to explain why I find the Okura preferable and not to deprecate the other fine hotels. In addition, in my opinion, the general cleanliness and service standards at Japanese hotels are very high to start with so visitors from outside Japan will likely find any of these hotels to rate highly in those regards. I note the only other Orbitz review of the Kobe Okura as of 13 April characterizes it as “showing its age.” While hotels reviews are obviously subjective, I disagree and can only suggest readers ask “showing its age” relative to what. While there may be more modern top notch hotels in Tokyo, Osaka, Singapore and Hong Kong, for example, I seriously question how much nicer they are and strongly suspect one will pay at least $100 more per night (assuming reservations are made at

Kobe Luminous Hotel

It is a decent hotel near a train stop.

The hotel was clean reasonably well appointed. The staff were OK. The location is somewhat out of the way, but it is near a station stop.

Hotel Sunroute Sopra Kobe

Good enough for one night.

Room was small like most in Japan, needs updating, but the price was fair for what you get.

Hotel La Suite Kobe Harborland

Very nice first class hotel.

We really like this hotel and book it every year. Overall, it is pretty good. I love the free movies, the handy guide in the room, the spacious room and the full suite of amneties they shower you with. My personal experience with the staff has been a little inconsistent at times, but nothing major. And we've had problems with small things like water pressure and heating (as in there is no way to adjust the heating in winter, something I would expect a first class hotel to have.)
