Purgatory Resort is a ski resort in the San Juan Mountains, Colorado. Purgatory offers over 90 trails, 11 chairlifts, and several terrain parks. Take the whole family to Purgatory for winter and enjoy activities, such as dog sledding, tubing, Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, horse-drawn sleigh rides, snowmobiling, and even ice climbing. There are several hotels in and near Purgatory Resort, so you can be sure to miss nothing during your stay at Purgatory.

Purgatory is located about 26 miles from the city of Durango. Durango is a great destination for a change of pace. Why not go shopping or visit one of the museums instead of sliding down those snowy hills around Purgatory? Durango is also perfect outside of winter. The nearby mountains and Colorado River make Durango great for the outdoorsy types.

Do you want to stay in Durango? There are a number of hotels and locations that come highly recommended. For one, a stay in a hotel near Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is highly recommended. This historic railway has been around since 1882, taking travelers through the San Juan National Forest. Then, take a round trip excursion and learn more in the Durango Silverton Train Museum. Speaking about Downtown Durango, this may be the most optimal choice for a hotel if you are planning to rather spend a lot of time in the city instead of as in the mountains. Downtown Durango stretches only along a couple blocks, but it houses many restaurants and bars, and even breweries and wineries. Maine Avenue cuts right through Downtown Durango. This is where many boutiques, restaurants, shops, bars, and other businesses are situated. One of the sights in the area is the Henry Strater Theater. It is one of the oldest continually running theaters in the state and country, hosting comedy shows, concerts, and more. On the north side of Durango, you will find the Animas Museum. It offers a variety of exhibits for the whole family in an old school house, showing the area's history. The museum is located near the highway and Animas River. If you are wanting to see a bit more of the area while visiting sights, ride out to the Piedra River Hot Springs, located in the Colorado Wilderness. It can be reached after a short hike. The best time to visit is late July through early October. In case you want to put your luck to the test, pay a visit to the Sky Ute Casino, southwest of Durango.
