If you stay here, take time to explore the antiques, pictures, memorabilia all around the lobby and adjacent rooms. Truly a unique, historic ambiance. Rooms outfitted with antiques. However, our room was small; the bathroom was small and the shower tiny. Not a deal-breaker, though. The worst part was the parking situation. There is limited parking near the hotel, and some extra parking a block away. Unloading and getting luggage to our second floor room was a challenge. One elevator that can only fit two people and two suitcases. Location was close to southern Rocky Mountains; a drive to Silverton and Ouray are a must if staying in Durango.

This is an old-west style hotel that adds a lot of character. In addition, it is located in the heart of downtown Durango, so much of the most popular areas to shop, dine, or photograph is very walkable.

I enjoyed my two nights at this historical hotel. The staff were pleasant and helpful. The common areas of the hotel were well kept. I found the room clean with adequate space for three. However, there’s little countertop space for personal items in the room assigned. The most disappointing was the climate control system in the room. With the thermostat set to 60f, the room would not cool below 75f. That made for two warm nights.

great hotel, ok room, tiny shower.

incredible old historic hotel. Very interesting displays. Room was small, shower very small. Floor uneven but what do you expect. Service outstanding. Diamond Belle saloon fun but does get crowded. Be aware there are steps to get into the hotel but the front desk will help with luggage.

Fantastic piece of working history

We only stayed one night, but the Strater will always be remembered. What a fantastic piece of working history. Every inch of this hotel is impressive. The staff are lovely and seem to love the hotel and their jobs. I was amazed at the quantity of staff who take care of this gem. We will be back. We had recently stayed at the El Tovar, which was terrific, but we put the Strater beside it. I think the Strater is better maintained with nicer amenities.
