Congress Plaza Hotel

Older building in need of renovations. Lobby is nice. Close to major tourist attractions.

Trouble with check-in: Had an Orbitz reservation which I showed them, but apparently it didn't go through to their system. They finally just gave me a room, supposedly a nicer room for the same money. Good view but... Seriously old room! Idk if they are unable to make changes because of historical societies or something, but the room was in embarrassing disarray with things falling apart, paint cracking. The shower took a long time to heat up and the internet sucked. I'm assuming the room was not really representative, but still...

The check in process was extremely slow. The lobby is deceiving, as it is nice and updated and the rooms are far from it. As soon as you step into the elevator you are immediately aware that the hotel is not well maintained. There is old, wet, moldy smelling carpet throughout the halls and rooms. Upon exiting the elevator you are greeted with peeling wallpaper and a creepy utility room door, that’s rotting away. Our stay was in the summer and the room was just as hot! Everything in the room was dated and damp. The air conditioner had 3 speeds slow, slower and slowest. No valid attempt at the obligatory hotel decor. The bathroom was equally dated and unkept with mold throughout the shower walls and drain. The staff was rude and unhelpful. It was the worst hotel experience we’ve ever had!

The Congress is one of the classic downtown Chicago hotels, and it does show its age. Still the rooms were clean and comfortable. The location is excellent, near public transportation, the Art Institute, and other attractions.

stayed here for Lollapalooza and it was def worth it..the rooms and staff were friendly and nice

Needs some updating but the beds and pillows are wonderful. My 13 year old grandson said they were the best Good location.

Nice, older hotel...close to everything. Easy for trains, shopping, food, Lake Michigan, etc.

Adequate, but the conditions were bad. A lot of money on way overdue updates to this hotel. Elevators were super slow. Convenient to Soldier Field. This hotel served its purpose and was way too expensive considering the conditions.

The hotel was definitely dated. We stayed for 4 days and not once did the staff replenish towels, toilet paper, etc.

Hotel is old and tired. The price was right, but lack of room by room climate control, a tub draining super slow and a musty smell (during a very humid week) made the facility disappointing.

Great location. I had a room with an excellent view of Buckingham Fountain. Hotel staff efficient and helpful. Room was recently redone and was very clean. It would be great to see a restoration of a facility with a great history. It is a fine hotel that could be a great hotel if someone with an appreciation for history would invest in it.

The price you pay for this place right on Michigan directly across from Grant Park is an unparalleled value. Rooms are inviting with modern deco and comfortable beds. The place isn't upscale by any means, but it is clean, the staff is friendly, and has some great history.

Upkeep on a classic hotel cannot be easy, so I appreciate the perfect water pressure and temperature in the shower, abundance of amenities (plenty of hand and facial soap, shampoo, lotion, and even toothbrush & toothpaste), and very clean room, as well as the small fridge and the coffee maker. Staff were professional but reserved. Location is convenient to the parks and the "L".

Hotel is in a great location. Check in was very slow. Seemed to be a computer issue. The elevator was slow, old, small and in much need of renovation. We were on the 6th floor which reeked of stale smoke as soon as we exited the elevator. Our room smelled the same way. Our clothes and luggage held on to that nasty odor. Funny thing was we had a non-smoking room, yet there was an ashtray on the bed stand. The bed was hard and squeaky. Could hear a lot of noise inside and outside all night.

I had only two complaints. 1. It was a hot day and the AC was not able to be adjusted per MY comfort 2. The hot water did not stay hot for an entire shower. It go from hot, to cold to luke warm

Great stay in Chicago .. loved the location and easy access to all areas!

The hotel is clean but the rooms are very dated and showing wear. I understand this property is probably 100 years old but some updating is needed.

Good location, friendly staff. Hotel could use updating

Terribly outdated. Chipped walls, old dank hallways and carpet. To be in such a great location, this hotel is a disgrace. Modern lobby and website photos are misleading. Tear the whole thing down!

Checked into the hotel and instantly was aggravated: after hauling all the suitcases and all the kids through the hotel, up to the 8th floor, walking to the absolute farthest room from the checkin counter, the keys didn’t work at all. So I haul the kids and bags back down the lobby to get new keys. Not even an “I’m sorry” or “I screwed up”, and certainly not a “let us make this right” from the front desk. Other things I disliked: the wireless internet didn’t work in my room and I had to go by the elevators to use my laptop. The rooms are spacious, yet they only have double beds and a desk from ikea in them. The rooms are desperately in need of an update. The concierge had no idea where we should park. The fitness room has equipment from the 60’s. I think the hotels’ general attitude is “we have a great location so we could care less if you like the hotel”
