Offshore hurricane
We come down every year to fish. This year hurricane Lee had the surf really rough so we didn't get to go fishing as much as hoped but we did have great weather all week.

great time
House is just as pictured - walking distance to stores and restaurants. The beach is roughly a 5 minute walk away. Has games and books to read on the rainy days, which came in handy for one afternoon

Bad Situation Made Better
Our week at Avon started with a Gale and ended with a power and then internet outage. Thankfully, the house we stayed in was lovely, clean, and wonderful amenities! We were happy as the vast majority of our vacation was spent in the house - cooking meals in the kitchen, enjoying views from the upstairs seating area, playing card games, and a lot of laughing. Can't control the weather! One 57 year old mom, 2 20 somethings, and a 19 year old and we all managed to make it through the storm with fond memories. Looking forward to booking again. Hopefully weather will cooperate.

3 week offseason stay at Offshore
This rating is more a reflection of the property management firm Hatteras Realty than it is of Offshore. That being said, the house does needs some upgrades.
The good: Close walk to beach access. 4wd access ramp less than a mile drive. Nice views of sound and ocean on the top deck. The layout is great, Kids room and master room upstairs with a large living room. First floor has a full well stocked kitchen with dining table where you can hang out late without disturbing those sleeping upstairs. great layout if you have a group with you.... Large selection of games was nice.
The bad: My biggest complaint doesn't have as much to do with the property as it does with Hatteras realty and way that they clean the rentals they're responsible for overseeing. The short of it, they don't clean the rentals. Window sills had what looked to be months worth of dust with dead flies/wasps on them that appeared to be there for ages. I felt sand sticking to my feet as I walked through the house, we pulled the vacuum out and took care of that ourselves.. Hatteras reality does provided clean linens but you can expect to use the same top comforter that the previous guests used which was unwashed as ours were covered in pubic hair. How am I certain they were not washed? well the dryer is likely 25-30 years old and is pretty much useless. If they did wash the house comforters it would take DAYS to dry them all.
In all honesty, I'm certain that Hatteras reality housekeepers didn't even come into our rental prior to our arrival as the previous guests used linens were upstairs IN FRONT of the main entrance while ours were just left by the stairs on the ground level. They would not have been able to enter or leave the house without having to remove the previous guests linen bin.
For the house its self... Offshore could use a few updates. Carpet is pretty disgusting. While I don't expect much for a full time rental, I'd say MOST of the carpet is stained covered and its ready to be replaced. Dryer is useless and you can expect even the smallest load to take all day. Again, I understand this is a rental, but I'd say the owners got their moneys worth with this 30+ year old dryer and its time for an upgrade. The beds are as bad as you would think... You can expect to have excruciating back pain if you're a side sleeper, after 2 days I drove over an hour each way up to the nearest mattress store in Nags head to buy a foam topper which helped, a little.

Stay at Offshore
It was the perfect place for us to grab a few days at the beach. Close to grocery store, short walk to the beach, and fun playing volleyball out back.

Solid House
I was reserved about renting out this house because of the one single review that was attached to the property. Overall, I was pretty happy with this house, especially holding 8 people for a week for $2000.
The reason I took 1 star away is someone named Carol at the Hatteras Realty office. I called to ask about the check-in procedures, and while I was on the phone, I had a few questions about the property. I was rightfully weary of the house (remember, it had a single 1 star review!), so I asked what the process would be if the air conditioning didn't work or there was some other major problem. I have never been talked to so rudely before for just asking a basic question. It's my one vacation and I'm spending two grand on it.. I would think I'm allowed to ask basic questions. Everyone else I dealt with was polite and helpful, though.
A few things you might want to know:
-The wifi is unreliable and spotty. If you need it, bring a hot spot or something with you.
-Bring your own toilet paper. They only leave you one roll.
-Every single bed SUCKS! They have thin, hard mattresses. I had to be exhausted before I could fall asleep on those things.
-Bring dish soap and/or dishwasher pods. None will be provided.
-Save yourself $130 if you're driving and bring your own sheets.
-The kitchen is pretty well stocked with pots and pans. I cooked every meal and it was very easy to do there.
-Wait until off times to grocery shop. The closest grocery store for miles is Food Lion and it might be very crowded, especially on a weekend or traditional shopping times.
-Bring bug spray!
-It was a great place to have a pet and there were no pet smells in the house. I loved that aspect of this property.
The walk to the beach was fairly easy. There are steps leading up to the beach, so if you're bringing a cart, make sure you have two people who can lift it up and down the stairs. People don't really follow pedestrian traffic laws, so never assume you can just walk through the crosswalk on your way to the beach.

Great location and great ocean and sound views. Property is well-stocked but, not well-maintained.
The downstairs A/C didn't work and repairs were made twice (1 of them didn't even last 12 hours), the utensils, dinnerware, and glassware had dried food on or in them and were put back into their proper places dirty. We had to wash all of them prior to utilizing. The dryer does not work properly and takes all day to dry a small load of laundry. The prior renters left sheets and towels in the washing machine and the floors were nasty. We spent the first day cleaning and mopping floors. The downstairs furniture needs updated and the kitchen table is sticky no matter how much cleaning is done to it. The internet service didn't work upon arrival and repairs had to be made. There is a playstation in the upstairs living area, however, there are no games. If the kids want to play with it, and they have such items, they need to bring games with them prior to arrival. The carpet needs replaced as there are stains on them and very dirty. The housekeeping crew had the gall to put an envelope on the refrigerator requesting tips. The best tip for the cleaning crew would be take a course in Housekeeping 101. It is strongly recommended and highly encouraged. There is a major crack under the inside deck door, which allowed a very, large opossum to get into that room each night. The fact that Hatteras Realty puts Wyndham's name to the property is very disappointing at best. This is not typical of Wyndham's property rentals as is suggested. The property was much cleaner when we left than it was upon our arrival. This does not speak highly of Mary Lee's By-The-Sea, the property manager, the owner, and, especially, Wyndham itself.
