Texas has a reputation as a wide open land of endless possibilities. No place better represents this than Austin, the state capital. One of the fastest growing cities in the country and a mecca for music, the city is a popular vacation destination. It's easy to fly from Washington, D.C., to Austin from Ronald Reagan National Airport (DCA) in Northern Virginia. A brief three and a half hour flight will take you into the heart of Texas.
The State Capital building is in the center of downtown. Many people like to stop by the historic Driskill Hotel for a drink. A little ways from downtown is the HOPE Outdoor Gallery, a beautiful collection of murals. The city is known as the live music capital of the world. Sixth Street and the SoCo district are popular nighttime destinations, but there are performing arts venues everywhere in city.
When you fly from Washington, D.C., to Austin, you'll land at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS). The airport lies at the juncture of Highways 71 and 183. A city bus can take you downtown in about 30 minutes. Amtrak trains travel to Dallas and San Antonio from Austin. The city is one of the sunniest in the country, with average winter temperatures in the low 60s. The South by Southwest music festival in March is a preeminent music event.
