Fly from Chicago to Cairo and see some of the greatest wonders of the ancient world. Cairo's landmarks are some of the best recognized, but the city is also a modern metropolis, rich with a vibrant nightlife, top-flight shopping and high-end cuisine. Take CTA, a taxi or Metra Rail train to O'Hare International Airport (ORD), and you could be touching down in Cairo in under 14 hours.
See the classic landmarks such as the Giza Pyramids and the Sphinx, and then delve even deeper into the archaeological history by browsing the exhibits on display at the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities. The Pharaonic Village provides a firsthand and in-depth lesson in the lives and traditions of the ancient Egyptians. Souq al-Gomaa is the quintessential picture of an African bazaar, an expansive market that stimulates all the senses and has just about everything you can imagine for sale. Visit Makar, a venue devoted to exploring the traditional cultural arts of Egypt with a focus on music and dance.
Both taxis and local buses run from Cairo International Airport (CAI) to the city. Between their bus and train system, public transportation thoroughly covers the Cairo area. While you can rely on taxis, you shouldn't need to for anything but the more far-flung landmarks. Average highs and lows in Cairo spike at around 100 and rarely sink below 50. Come during December to see showings from some of the most innovative new talent at the Cairo International Film Festival.
