Escape everyday life and head to Acapulco, Mexico s first party town. When you fly to Acapulco International Airport (ACA), the first thing you ll notice is the beautiful landscape, so it s no wonder that Hollywood royalty, including Judy Garland, Elvis Presley and Elizabeth Taylor visited on a regular basis.
Established as Hollywood s favourite vacation destination in the 1950s, a booming nightlife grew in Acapulco, which still thrives. However, clubs and restaurants aren t all that there is to do here and three things you must experience include:
Built in 1616, this pentagon-shaped fort sits on top of a hill in downtown Acapulco and is the most important Spanish fortress on the Pacific Coast.
The fort is now home to Acapulco s History Museum and has 15 exhibition rooms, charting the history of the region and the conquest of the Southern Seas.
La Quebrada is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Acapulco, thanks to the cliff divers who dive into the sea from 40ft and 80ft ledges, landing perfectly in the swell below.
Take a tour of the Coyuca Lagoon, a picturesque freshwater lagoon that is home to number of birds, including pelicans, herons and storks. It has also been used as a location in Hollywood films, such as The African Queen and Rambo.
Acapulco was named the Pearl of the Pacific when it first became a hot Hollywood hangout. The TV show The Love Boat has forever immortalized this city.
