Monterey is the perfect pit stop on your way to San Francisco. This beautiful coastal city is packed with brilliant outdoor activities and fun things to see and do. It is especially known for its scenery. Not surprisingly, nearby locals love to escape the city to chill out here. In short, Monterey is the perfect vacation spot for you and your pet.
Take a long hike, or cycle along the Monterey Peninsula Recreational Trail, which stretches from Pacific Grove (near the 17-mile drive) all the way to Castroville. Dogs are more than welcome to come along for the ride, as long as they are kept on a leash at all times.
If you are keen for a dose of culture, head downtown to Monterey’s Historic District, which is also known as ‘Old Monterey.’ Explore the incredible history of the area and spot some of the landmarks, such as California's first theater, and the Monterey Customs House, where the American flag was first raised over California. Please note that pets are not allowed inside some of the buildings, so make sure to check in advance.
Afterwards, enjoy the culinary delights of Monterey Bay and try some of its famous seafood down at The Old Fisherman’s Wharf. The outdoor area is filled with delicious restaurants selling fresh fish, from casual clam shacks to fancier seafood eateries. It might be hard to choose, so you might want to try a local favorite: One of the city’s specialties is clam chowder served inside a bowl made of bread.
