The staff at the Countryside Suites in Independence MO were very polite but there was a $30 fee, collected before you're allowed to check in, for booking using a 3rd party and the room wasn't worth the money spent.

Although we paid fully online and disclosed all guest through Expedia, guys at desk/ owner was rude and claimed Expedia did not communicate that to him so we had to pay an extra $40 cash plus $100 deposit per room (we reserved 2 rooms) at check in, says he does this at all 19 of his hotels. The rooms we not in great shape smelled bad stains on the bedding, the overflow valve was dangling open exposing a huge hole in the tub. TVs didn't work, 1 room had no fridge or microwave the other only had a fridge. Although it was non smoking hotel could smell people smoking either in a room next to or below us and sounded like we were above a laundry room that was constantly doing laundry all night stuck on a spin cycle. Dirty laundry and bags of trash was left in most corners of the halls.

Worst experience with how dirty this place was

The front desk agent showed me 5 different rooms before assigning one to me since they were all in bad conditions. They were all dirty, smelled like pee, there was a lot of insecuirty of people outside drinking standing outside the room doors. The carpets smelled like they had been peed on and the blankets seemed like they had not been washed with yellow stains. It was horrible, I did not end up staying and had to look for another hotel.

I never checked in because the manager kept asking for cash after already paying for the trip through Expedia. I questioned it and he kept pointing to their atm while smiling then the amount went to $120 then to $60. I was wanting to book for another night and I think it might have been language barrier but he did at one point say “I told you 3 times already” after asking about the cash he wanted. I ended up going elsewhere.

Worst hotel EVER.

When I arrived the main entrance was locked at 10 pm and i had to call just to be let in when they answered the phone i was informed of an additional $100 deposit either cash or card. And would it be ok? After agreeing i was let into the lobby and proceeded with check in and was told there's also a $10 cash property fee. After giving the woman a $20 bill she couldn't even make change and said she would have to bring it to my room. She then said "I have a room on the second floor". I asked her for a room on the first floor because I just had knee surgery 6 days prior. She stated she would have to check a room to see if it was clean while I waited. When she came back she said "the room was clean but it was a king bed not a queen" as if she expected me to pay extra and repeated it again after I asked if that was a problem. Most places considering my condition would have been very helpful and just accomodated my injury at no extra cost. I was very tired from driving all day long and said "just give me the room on the second floor" After finally getting a key I went back to my truck and pulled around the side of the building as directed and found my way to the room. When I got inside the TV was on ? Idk why. I shut the door and when i tried to lock the security deadbolt I had to pull the door in and out and it was quite a struggle just to engage the lock. The bathroom sink had toothpaste all over it and looked as though it had not been cleaned at all. At least bed was clean.

When checking in, there were 3 other parties there trying to check in. Hotel was requiring an additional cash only property fee. They tried charging us an extra $80 plus the property fee. We left and didn’t stay there. I would avoid at all costs.
