Marriott Hartford Downtown4.0 out of 5.0

When staying at a Best Western, you get a good rate, a free breakfast, comfortable room, and cookies waiting for you when you come in to the hotel. You feel like you get a good value for your money and that the hotel appreciates your patronage. I did not get that feeling from the Marriott. This hotel leaves me feeling that corporate spends hours trying to figure out another way to squeeze another penny out of their customers, rather than trying to figure out how they can make us want to come back for another visit. This hotel didn't charge a resort fee, but a lot of them do that now. This hotel didn't offer me free breakfast, but they did want more money for an upgrade to a better wifi experience, $6 for a bottle of water, $5 for 2 cold tablets, and $38 to park. I guess we are lucky to be there. If you look past that, the rooms and bedding were comfortable. The rooms were hot. Thermostats only go to 66, so we were very hot while sleeping. I ordered room service, expecting a nice italian pizza, but got some tomatoes on basically a cracker. I know, it is a flatbread pizza, but what a disappointment. You might ask why did I stay here. I was attending an event at the convention center, so I pretty much had to stay here. I'll give it that, it was convenient.
Except for room service (which I describe below) this hotel is your typical Marriott and seems to have been remodeled / updated recently as the decor in the rooms is modern and the bathrooms are new and clean. Bed was nice and the TV new with access to allow you to log into your streaming services (Netflix, Youtube, Pandora, etc.) The location is great if you have an event at the CT Convention Center, otherwise it doesn't seem safe to walk anywhere more than 300 yards away from the hotel. There are only a few restaurants nearby...not really much choice if you want something other than Capitol Grill or a sports bar. Front desk staff was friendly. Room was very clean. Room Service: A complete joke. I guess I am the last person in the world to find out about Marriott's Fresh Bites program. And find out I did. I came back to my room around 9pm after a show at the nearby Bushnell Theater looking forward just relaxing in the room and ordering room service. I imagined a knock at the door and upon opening it, seeing the room service cart with a white table cloth, a flower, and real silverware and plates, etc. When the actual knock on the door came, I opened it and there stood a Marriott employee with a bag...reminded me of how I get my meal at the drive-through at McDonald's. Except here, the price was 400% more. Guess it's not the Hartford Marriott Downtown's fault, it's a Marriott program thought up by the brain-trust in the corporate office. I haven't read the other reviews, but I'll guess there has been quite a few other disappointed customer. Bottom line, if you book yourself at the this Marriott expecting a premium hotel, think again. What a joke.
Room was lovely, check in seamless, but the real highlight was in the restaurant, Vivo. We had the good fortune to have Christine as our server. She was cordial, gracious, friendly and we chatted extensively about her Jamaican background and her penchant for being hospitable. The menu she recommended was delicious, the wine she suggested was excellent and it was a lovely experience, enhanced by Christine's delightful service. She made us feel very welcomed and very, very satisfied. Thank you Christine and Vivo!! Thank you, Marriott!!
My check in was seamless. My room was large and very well thought out although the bathroom was small in comparison. Food was terrific and both Vivo and the lounge...L. Starbucks is in the lobby. Parking is not included but is very close by as is the Convention Center. Just steps away from the Science Center all in all a great stay!
I last was here in 2012 and recently stayed the end of July 2017. They have totally changed the decor and it looks really great. I like that they have couches scattered throughout the lobby and have ports so you can charge your electronics! The Starbucks is great and has comfortable seating to chat, eat and catch up on work or social media. The only location they have not changed is the main restaurant which with everything else could use a refresh...but it still looks great just the same. If you plan to stay with your family, it is a great hotel for kids, they have a wonderful swimming pool that overlooks the city and there is a science museum right next door. Across the way, they have put in new restaurants, a movie theater and small shops which can be easily walked in less than 15 minutes if you want to get some fresh air and not stare at your phone or computer. Another great feature is the city offers a free shuttle that loops around town and stops at different areas, it's called DASH.
Not impressed by the staff of this hotel. Only one person at check-in desk when there was a line of people waiting to check in. When questioned about an event advertised in the hotel they knew nothing. Tried to find a concierge and there was none to be found (some of staff didn't know what that was). Asked for recommendations for dinner the staff knew nothing about anything outside the hotel. The room is large and nicely furnished but the bathroom does not have any kind of exhaust fan and no matter how big the room is that is unacceptable. We are here and have to stay but would not recommend this to anyone.
Situated just off the highway and right next to the Science Centre, I was close to everything I went to CT for. Short drive to West Hartford area or a 15 minute drive to the mall. Parking was a breeze, lot situated in adjoined building and one flat fee gives in and out privilege. Forgot my purse in the lobby area and it just sat there until we called the front desk an hour later! Miss the late night coffee/tea offered in lobby area of most hotels, had to make it in my room.....
Not too much to say here. Hotel room was clean and location is easy to get off the highway. Safe neighborhood with walking distance to restaurants. Staff was helpful. One thing that I found offputting was that breakfast room service options, which were minimal and delivered in bags, like takeout. I was disappointed by this but overall, my stay was fine for the short time I was there.
This hotel is as about as easy to get to as you can get in Hartford, CT. It is right off the highway and easily walkable to any place in downtown. It is right at the CT Science Center and the neighborhood around it is developing quickly. The Starbucks downstairs is easy to access on the way out. The rooms are comfortable and I did get to use the pool which was very nice. I was able to sleep well and didn't have much noise. This is my hotel of choice in Hartford.
Big convention was in town when we held our event there. It was pretty chaotic and they were late getting the ballroom ready because another event ran over. Be careful when booking to make sure they leave enough time to turn the room
