We had an amazing time at this beautiful royakan in Hakone. The room: stunning views, private open air onsen gorgeous bathroom, semi-outdoor shower, a toilet from your best dreams. It was like a dream. The staff: helpful and kind, they will do everything to ensure you feel at rest. Location: located up a hill, so definatly take the shuttle for 100yen when you have luggage. Its a steep climb to get that view. However when you don't have bags and your knees are high functioning, you are a close walk to Hakone station, have a few really yummy restaurant options on that strip as well. There is a family mart about a four minute walk from the hotel. One piece of massive criticism though: Breakfast. We opted for the breakfast service, and were immediately asked if we wanted Japanese or American. We opted to double down - One american and one Japanese. The Japanese one was fantastic. We were there for three breakfasts and everyday was something new and delicious to try. However, the american one was terrible. It actually felt passive aggressive dig on not choosing the Japanese breakfast. There was no attempt at making a good meal. It was literally the same everyday: 5 types of small loaf bread (variety never changed), then a plate of scrambled eggs (cold every day) a sausage, a strip of undercooked bacon, and a weak salad of lettuce with shreds of onion and red pepper (one day i got yellow pepper! I guess that was the verity but the dressing was nice). Everyday there was a splash of ketchup that got on everything just squirted onto the plate. Oh also a cup of corn soup? Note: this breakfast was the same charge as the japanese breakfast. I guess my main issue is that there is so much wasted potential. They could have done a Japanese take on western breakfast or actually researched and put effort into what one is. Either way, whatever THIS was, they should either not offer it or put it up to the standards of the rest of the experience. Still loved my time here. I was very sad to leave and was great value for dollar.

We’ve stayed there for 1 night due to limit of time but everything was so perfect every rooms got their own private Onsen at the terrace but public onsen also not bad. The staffs are friendly and could speak english quite well. My recommendation is to stay minimum 2 nights with all inclusive, the meals are so great and well-prepared.

It was raining pretty hard when we got here so I was already in a bad mood prior to coming. But after seeing the place, and it’s beautiful interior, I had to set miss grumpy to the side. We were quickly greeted with welcome drinks. We only waited for a couple of minutes until someone showed us to our room. The room was very cute. It had traditional style feel to it where the living room area changes into a bedroom (they do it while you are having dinner downstairs). The onsen was very relaxing, and we had great views of the mountains. It was absolutely breathtaking. The room was spotless and the bed was surprisingly very comfortable. The food was very interesting but delicious, it was an eleven course meal and by the 8th dish, my husband and I were ready to tap out. The only thing I wish that they had was a place to dry out our shoes. They took our shoes from us and kept it in a damp area I’m assuming; so when we got it back, it was still soaked. But I understand because they had tatami mats in the bedroom and some people don’t care to remove their shoes when in the bedroom. But putting them in a place where they can dry would be much appreciated (for future guest or me because I want to stay here again). Overall, I enjoyed my stay. Yes, it’s pricey but for the amazing view, room quality, private onsen, breakfast and dinner. It’s so worth it!

The ryokan experience is definitely something all travellers to Japan should experience at least once. While the food can be hit or miss (primarily based on personal tastes and whims), the experience itself was lovely. The staff at the hotel are top notch - polite, moderately competent in their English, and prompt. The rooms are wonderfully big compared to the busier cities, and the tatami beds were surprisingly comfortable. But the through and through highlight of the trip is definitely the private onsen - such a relaxing atmosphere being ensconced in a warm bath with nature right at your door. The heated rack for towels was also very much appreciated as the weather outside was still a little chilly late at night when we came back inside from the onsen.

Hakone Airu was a lucky internet find for us, who wanted a traditional relaxing Ryoken experience with some privacy. The private onsen with a Mountain View was so serene. The food there was artistic and tasty! Some of the best sashimi we had! We loved the traditional robes and slept so well on their mats. It was a truly relaxing getaway, and I recommend Hakone Airu!

This ryokan was one of the highlights of my trip to Japan! The surrounding town is so beautiful, especially a night. We arrived at 6pm and they immediately took our shoes and gave us a tour. We put on our comfy robes and at 7pm we were called downstairs to a private dining room for dinner. The dishes served to us were incredible! Every single dish was fresh, delicious and unique. The food was displayed so beautifully. Our server was very sweet and explained each dish to us. I forgot his name but he was awesome! After dinner, we went back upstairs to enjoy our room. The room itself was very clean, spacious and had a beautiful modern take on a traditional Japanese room. The tatami mat under out feet felt heavenly. We absolutely LOVED the private hot spring on our balcony. The bath instantly relaxes you and soothes all your whole body. The fresh winter mountain air was bliss while we soaked in the tub. The futons were incredibly comfy and it didn't even feel like we were sleeping on the floor. I highly recommend this ryokan for anyone who is looking for a private bath and modern decor!

We stayed here for one night on our way from Tokyo to Kyoto. We had a perfect stay from start to finish. The room was amazing with in room bath and views over the Sakura studded hills around the property. The 10 course meal served in the private dining room was interesting and really gave us a taste of Japan we wouldn’t have experienced elsewhere. Loved the yukata we wore during our stay. All the staff were lovely and eager to help wherever they could. Would recommended to anyone looking for a night of luxury and a taste of Japanese custom.

This is a place where you can relax and just enjoy the onsen and food. It's not a typical Japanese ryoukan, but it also has some influences from Bali. I would recommend this spot for couples, and because of the private onsen in the room. The price is a bit high, but we fully enjoyed the experience.

Bali styles ryokan Sleep on tatami mats Nice TV with Netflix Excellent breakfast and dinner - a work of art Awesome onsen on balcony Unique experience Very friendly staff Great place to stay when in Hakone Would gladly come back!! Yukatas and PJ were provided Treats in room Excellent skin care products provided

The hotel was amazing! The man who helped us with dinner and breakfast was awesome!!! The food was great and the wife and I loved the private hot spring with the view of the mountains. The yukata the hotel provided seems to not be warm enough but as it turns out it plenty warm.
