In short, Phoenix is all about red rocks, blue skies, and golden sunshine. Known for its mountain trails, city lights, palm-canopied resorts, and mural-adorned streetscapes, Phoenix is the cosmopolitan heart of Arizona and the soul of the American Southwest. The city’s perpetual sunshine might tempt you to find a secluded resort and spend all your days sipping margaritas next to the swimming pool, but we advise you to not give in to this temptation. Renting a car conveniently at the airport, for example, to go out and explore the city and find things to do in Phoenix's desert horizons, will broaden yours.

What to See in Phoenix

With more than 300 days of sunshine a year, hence the nickname “Valley of the Sun”, exploring Phoenix is an agreeable as can be. However, try to avoid June, July, and August when the mercury tops 100°F or about 40°C. If you want culture, you will get it plenty in Phoenix thanks to its finest museums, including the Heard Museum, the Phoenix Art Museum, and the Museum of Musical Instruments.

To delight in music, reserve a ticket for the symphony, opera, or one of its several theaters. Sports lovers will want to head to Downtown with its sports arenas, live music venues, more theaters, art galleries, rooftop lounges, and more than a hundred restaurants.

If you are interested in nature, Phoenix will be a wonderful destination for you as well. The Valley marks the northern tip of the Sonoran Desert, a prehistoric seabed that extends into northwestern Mexico with a landscape offering much more than just cacti. Palo Verde and mesquite trees, creosote bushes, brittle bush, and agave dot the land, which is accustomed to being scorched by extreme temperatures for weeks at a time.

Be sure not to miss scrambling to the top of Camelback Mountain’s red rocks for a challenging hike with a payoff: a view over the entire city. Also, schedule in a visit to the Phoenix Ranch Market, the most authentic Mexican market in town, where artisans make everything from tortillas to hibiscus juice.

A stroll through the Bentley Projects, a funky downtown warehouse and outpost of one of the city’s most popular galleries, is also highly recommended. In case you want to explore the desert, be sure to fill up your gas tank and buy enough snacks and water before heading for the wasteland.
