Tegucigalpa boasts some of the most interesting religious architecture in Honduras, including Iglesia Los Dolores and Catedral de San Miguel. The Metrorail provides direct access to Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD), and you can use the city's Metrobus as well. The flight to Tegucigalpa will take a little under four hours.
All three branches of Honduran government are located in Tegucigalpa, as are the headquarters of the National Police and the Armed Forces. An enormous statue of Jesus Christ, El Cristo del Picacho, is visible from almost anywhere in the city. Hike up to Parque de Picacho for the best views of Tegucialpa and to see the statue up close. The National Zoo is on that same hill and features parrots and monkeys as well as several other tropical species. Two professional soccer clubs, C.D. Olimpia and C.D. Motagua, play their home games at Estadio Tiburcio Carias Andino. Iglesia de la Merced and Iglesia de San Francisco are also traveler favorites.
After you fly from Washington DC to Tegucigalpa, you can rent a car at Toncontin International Airport (TGU) or take a cab or bus into the city. The airport is located on the CA5 highway. Temperatures in Tegucigalpa are consistent through the seasons, and average lows and highs range between 60 and 80 degrees all year long. Easter Week is one of the biggest events of the year, so be sure to see the many processions downtown if you visit during this time.
