Why You Should Take A Flight To Honduras

The Central American republic of Honduras is Spanish-speaking, reflecting its colonial past, but has a rich indigenous culture making it a great destination to explore – its cuisine, music and festivals are all good reasons to book plane tickets to Honduras. It is a country to experience, rather than sightsee, as the public face of Honduran culture is its fiestas. With a mainly Caribbean climate, it’s a popular location for diving and lounging on its exquisite white sand beaches.

When To Book Flights To Honduras

Hondurans love a good reason to take to the streets and celebrate, with plenty of carnivals all year round, so start hunting your cheap tickets to Honduras! In late May, the Carnival of Friendship in La Ceiba lasts a whole week and people enjoy special foods and music and visit the many exhibitions that spring up. June sees the Feria Juniana (June Fair) in San Pedro Sula, featuring a programme of concerts, art and sporting events. In August, the Venice-themed fair in Puerto Cortés features a gondola parade in the bay and spectacular fireworks. Honduras is humid all year round and experiences heavy rains from September to February. While it’s temperate inland, typical temperatures throughout the year range from 65F to 90F.

Main Airports In Honduras

  • Ramón Villeda Morales International Airport (SAP)

Ramón Villeda Morales International Airport, also known as La Mesa International Airport and named after a former president, is seven miles from second city San Pedro Sula and is the busiest airport in Honduras – it handles 750,000 passengers yearly. As well as international flights, you can fly to the beach resorts of Roatán and Tela and to the Mayan ruins at Copán.

  • Toncontín International Airport (TGU)

Toncontín International Airport serves the capital, Tegucigalpa, which just four miles away. It’s not a popular arrival point as it is ranked the second most dangerous airport in the world.

  • United
  • Delta
  • Aeroméxico
  • Avianca

How To Get To And Around Honduras

You will probably fly into Ramón Villeda Morales International Airport in San Pedro Sula, but there is also a ferry service from neighboring Belize.

Internal flights operate between the three main cities of Tegucigalpa, La Ceiba and San Pedro Sula, and to the coastal areas. Ferries sail from La Ceiba to the Bay Islands.

Intercity buses are cheap and generally comfortable, and probably the easiest way to get around Honduras. City buses are not advised for tourists – it’s safer to hire a taxi, colectivo (shared taxi) or a tuk-tuk, all of which are cheap.

Driving in Honduras is only for the brave as the locals rarely heed the speed limit and the quality of roads away from the toll routes is poor. You can hire cars and motorbikes in Tegucigalpa, San Pedro Sula and La Ceiba.

Places To Visit In Honduras

Tegucigalpa

The Honduran capital, colloquially known as Téguz, is the country’s largest city. It is home to the Museum of National Identity. The place to hang out is the Plaza Morazán, the main square and hub of the city. Téguz has a vibrant cultural and bar scene. Take a taxi to the El Picacho park four miles out of town to admire the impressive El Cristo del Picacho statue of Jesus Christ and stunning views.

Copán

The exquisite Mayan ruins at Copán are unmissable. The site was occupied by Mayans for two millennia and features awe-inspiring sculptures and steles. Allow at least half a day to explore the main archaeological park (price $15), longer if you want to view surrounding sites. Official guides are on hand and it’s worth hiring one to get the most out of your visit.

The Bay Islands

The islands of Utila, Roatán and Guanaja, some 50 miles from La Ceiba in the Caribbean Sea, are the place to head for snorkelling, diving and the world’s second largest coral reef. There are plenty of diving schools and you can also try whale spotting.

Tips And Tricks For Traveling In Honduras

Honduras is off the beaten track for most travellers, so prices for everything are low and $25 a day is plenty for food and a room. Organised tours also tend to be very cheap as the tourism agencies will fight for your patronage!

Honduras suffers from a poor image and the crime rate means the U.S. Department of State recommends you check its travel advisory before you book anything. That said, it is no worse than many developing countries – following government advice and taking sensible precautions when traveling around should keep you safe.
