The Flight from Vancouver to London
When you fly direct from Vancouver to London you will be travelling overnight, with the plane taking off in the afternoon or evening and arriving in London the next morning or around lunchtime, so you may want to pack comfortable clothes for sleeping and an eye mask in your carry-on bag.
The journey takes between nine-and-a-quarter and ten hours and covers more than 4,700 miles. The precise route your plane takes depends on the atmospheric conditions as the plane will usually try to ride the jet stream. This high-altitude band of fast-moving air over the North Atlantic can help make the journey faster and more fuel efficient, reducing carbon emissions. From Vancouver the plane will head northeast across Canada and over Hudson Bay. Sometimes it will head as far north as Baffin Island and fly over the southern tip of Greenland. From there the plane heads down past Iceland towards the UK.
During the flight the plane will reach an altitude of 35,000 feet or higher and can hit speeds of 600mph.
At Vancouver International airport you must check in at least two hours before your flight is scheduled to depart, and you will need your passport. Getting to the airport is easy, as there are trains, buses and cabs available. There is also plenty of parking if you are driving.
Once you have checked in you can relax in the many bars, restaurants and cafes at the airport, each terminal has a different selection. Most long-haul flights offer food and drink, but you can also order meals to take on the plane with you, check if refreshments are included when you book with Orbitz. If you fancy some retail therapy while you wait for your flight you can indulge in some duty free shopping.
London Heathrow handles more international passenger traffic than any other airport in the world and is a hub for British Airways. From the airport you can take buses, trains or the London Underground to the city center.
Gatwick is smaller than Heathrow, but has plenty of transport options, including trains.
