New Orleans, Louisiana
The best way to reach Memphis from New Orleans is to take a flight from the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport. Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, US Airways, American Airlines, and AirTran Airways handle flights to Memphis through this airport. If you've ever had a problem parking at another airport, you should know that you won't have a problem here. The long-term parking garage is clearly marked, and you can park for $13 per day. Don't worry if you can't drive; you can also take a taxi, limousine, airport shuttle, or bus to the airport. Taking a taxi from downtown will cost around $33, while the airport shuttle charges $20 per person.
The terminals at the airport provide a variety of dining options for travelers. Each concourse has a bar where you can find quick drinks, and Praline Connection offers freshly made pralines. If you need something a little more substantial, try Lucky Dog, PJ's Coffee, or Café Beignet. A variety of national fast food chains are also located on-site.
Many travelers visit Memphis for the numerous sites related to Elvis Presley. It's also home to Beale Street, which has dozens of restaurants and nightclubs. Even if you aren't a music fan, you will still find attractions like museums and historic sites to see during your Memphis trip.
You will find multiple transportation options at the Memphis International Airport. Avis, Enterprise, Thrifty, Hertz, and four other rental car agencies offer rental cars for travelers, and taxis are available near the terminal. Many hotels have free shuttle buses that make trips to and from the airport, and you can also rent a limousine.
Memphis becomes a crowded city in January and around the holidays because fans come to celebrate the dates of Elvis's birth and death. Summers can sometimes feel uncomfortable for visitors because the temperatures often reach 90 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. The spring and fall are better times to visit because temperatures range from the 70s to 80s and it isn't very humid.
The first stop on your trip should be Graceland, which is where Elvis lived. His home is open to the public, and several museums and souvenirs shops are located across the street. Right down the road is the Heartbreak Hotel, which has several theme rooms dedicated to some of his songs and actual rooms at the house. The Lorraine Motel, where Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated, houses the National Civil Rights Museum and is also open to the public. You can even see the famous duck sculpture at the Peabody Hotel or eat at a restaurant owned by legendary jazz musician B.B. King.
