Nestling at the entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the resort of Gatlinburg offers a mix of small-town charm, natural splendor and tourist attractions.
The town is home to Tennessee’s only ski resort and its location makes it a magnet for those drawn to the beauty of the Smokies. McGhee Tyson Airport in Knoxville is 41 miles from Gatlinburg. The airport caters to around 2 million passengers a year. The terminal has a Smoky Mountains theme, with plenty of restaurants and shops.
Car rental counters can be found on the lower level and with few public transport options limited hiring a vehicle is the best way to get to Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. The drive takes just over an hour.
The much smaller Asheville Regional Airport lies some 57 miles to the east of Gatlinburg on the other side of the Smoky Mountains National Park and is around a two-hour drive away.
Some flights are also available to Tri Cities Regional Airport in Blountville is 81 miles to the north and the busiest airport in the area is Nashville International, but it is 179 miles and a three-and-a-half-hour drive away.

Most visitors arrive by car, but parking can be hard to find in Gatlinburg. The Gatlinburg Trolley system offers a convenient way to get around the town and links Gatlinburg to Pigeon Forge.
The Gatlinburg Aerial Tramway is an attraction in its own right. The cable car departs downtown Gatlinburg and takes visitors on a two-mile ride to town’s amusement park and ski resort, and the views of the mountains are spectacular.
The Smoky Mountains are the star of the show. There are hundreds of miles of walking tracks in the area and lots of day tours, these transport you into the heart of the park, shed light on the areas rich history and offer plenty of opportunities to eat and shop.
A visit to Pigeon Forge would not be complete without a visit to the outrageous Dollywood theme park.
