With just one day to see San Francisco, this hotel was ideal. Super helpful staff and fun painted rooms. Would certainly recommend. Improvement would be a full length mirror in the room and no wasteful single use plastic at breakfast.
The hotel is in an excellent location and has many bars and restaurants very close. The staff are amazing and I must say very helpful- hector in particular. The major issue is the noise, it is very noisy and even though I was high up I was awoken by dump trucks all night. Besides that the property does a good job and the rooms are nice.
Upon arrival, we had an idea that our experience wasn't going to be a positive one. Check in took a while as a new reception man was being "trained", that's fine I appreciate everyone has to learn. The lift is a death trap, old fashioned sliding door. We stayed on floor 2, the room was about 12 feet by 12 feet absolutely tiny for a 5 night stay and we struggled to find space for our cases. We were on a 3 week holiday so had plenty of luggage. The room was relatively clean and bedding and towels were ok. There was no air conditioning in the bedroom and no way of opening the window as they were sealed shut. It was very hot. The worst part about our first night was the fact that after going out for food and a beer we returned to find out that directly under our room is a nightclub that is open from 4pm to 2am and the noise is ridiculous, its like having a live band in your bedroom!. Next morning we complained and moved room to the fourth floor directly above our previous room and had exactly the same experience. The bedroom walls are paper thin and so are the ceilings ! We only managed to stay for 4 out of the 5 nights as checked out an into a different hotel. This place is nothing more than a glorified hostel (and nothing glorious about it). I didn't class this hotel as cheap, and in my opinion pay slightly more of your hard earned cash and stay in an actual "hotel". We received no apology on check out even though we were asked why we were leaving early. The man on reception just kindly informed us that if we had checked out before 12pm, (it was 3.oopm) we would have had a refund of our last nights charge!!!!.
Very well located, good value, clean and comfy, helpful staff There was a mess up in our room booking, we were upgraded at no extra cost, good restaurants and cafes and the excellent Irish bank bar about 50 yards away
We really enjoyed our stay at hotel Des Arts. Rooms were comfortable, well priced, central location. Staff were friendly and the bar down stairs was a little hidden gem! Definitely recommend staying here and would book here again!
This hotel was the least expensive SF hotel I could find. My expectations were low other than the price and location as it was walking distance to the gates of China Town and walking distance from SF's finest shopping/dining/bar scenes. If you have not been to SF in the last 5 years downtown traffic will shock you. The hotel is funky each room and hallway provides a local artist their canvas so as you walk through the hotel you sense the mood change as you drift between artists expressions. The room i stayed in was amazing the wall paper was falling off and provided a nice canvas for the artist. Four post tub filled the bathroom and the sink was at the opposite wall where they tapped into the next rooms plumbing. Added pics below. but.. if you are expecting a Ramada style Inn you will not like this place so keep on looking, you will not enjoy your stay. ie keb1350 "would not recommend"
The location is good, but the room is so small, so old, and what was on the walls of our (extremely small) room is NOT ART! It was as though someone let a tagger in there with 4 cans of spray paint. The bed was comfortable enough, and the employees were beyond nice. I wouldn't stay there again, and not one of the pics I've seen online looked one bit like the hotel we were in...their photographer must have some great filters. The breakfast was pretty sparse. The owners of this dump should fix it up and then REALLY have a nice place.
We'll give 5 stars for overall enjoyment, quality, and decor, etx. This is not a high priced hotel and worth every dime that is charged (i.e. worth the price). To be clear, we really enjoyed our stay. The staff was pleasant, the manager (Celia) was experienced and nice. Room was super clean and very well decorated. Plus a great location. BTW; this hotel offers room discounts when returning in the future. We loved the art. It is all over the place - awesome!
What a wonderful find In The Middle of this Amazing city, we stayed for 10 nights Here The staff are more than Excellent , Cecelia on Reception was a little star Nothing was to much trouble for her, she went over and above the call of duty to make are stay most enjoyable, The Hotel was exceptionally clean with lovely white fluffy towels, and wonderful cotton sheets on the beds, The hotel is situated right next to china town, and union square,The security was brilliant for two ladies traveling alone, I would Highly recommended this hotel, A fantastic find in the middle of this vibrant city.
After taxes, I paid over $280/night to stay here due to a limited work travel budget. I knew it was bad when I checked in to the bare bones lobby and asked the front desk host if there would be a coffee maker or water kettle in my room. She smiled and responded, "No, the rooms just have the basic hotel amenities like towels, iron, ironing board. Only motels provide things like kettles or coffee makers, not hotels!" Ummm, are you trying to tell me that $280/night doesn't warrant a basic amenity like a coffee maker or water kettle and that "hotels" like the W or Westin don't offer "motel" amenities like these?! The elevator is total crap - like the old ones that are rickety and you have to pull the door lever to get it moving. Several people said it was too heavy and hurt their hands. The rooms are meant to be artistic and painted by different artists, but they felt like single-room occupancy living, or poor Tenderloin apartments that just have clean linens. Some of the "art" just looks like horrible spray painting. As other reviewers have said, there is zero ventiliation - no AC, no fan, nothing at all to control the temperature of your room other than a heater or opening your really old windows. The lighting was extremely poor - only dim overhead lighting and not even side table lights for the bed. The bathroom sink was old and horrendous - the hot water tap is on the left and the cold water tap is on the right -- you either get scalding hot or super cold water - no in between option. The "continental breakfast" that is free of charge is also total garbage - the most basic and nearly inedible bread, with terrible coffee and just a hot water kettle. It's actually pretty insulting. It was honestly worse than providing nothing at all. When I asked the front desk host where the plastic forks were (they had only plastic spoons and knives out), instead of replenishing the plastic forks in the basket for everyone, he went to the back and just handed me two. What about everyone else and doing your basic job? Lastly, even the complimentary Wi-Fi wasn't working properly, as it constantly went in and out and had slow speeds. I'd never recommend this place to anyone. At $200-300/night, this is NOT a budget hotel or even a hotel for that matter. It's a glorified and grossly over priced hostel. The only thing going for it is its location, but if you are looking for that, there are plenty of hotels nearby that will be better for you to spend your hard earned cash in.
