Surrounded by parks, nature trails, and more, Poughkeepsie is a great place to bring your pet. Enjoy the scenic views and fresh air no matter what season you choose to visit.
One of the best things to do in Poughkeepsie with your pet is head to the Walkway Over the Hudson. The longest pedestrian bridge in the world, your pet can enjoy the space while you enjoy the city line views.
Nearby, you will find numerous parks, trails, and farms that are extremely pet friendly. Rent a car and explore areas, like Hyde Park, New Paltz Village, the historic Rhinebeck, and Minnewaska State Park Preserve. Minnewaska has over 50 miles of footpaths to explore. A little farther away is the 260-ft high Kaaterskill Falls.
If you have a pooch with you, check out one of the many nearby dog parks. Doug Phillips Dog Park is the closest at about 30 minutes from Poughkeepsie while 40 minutes away are Sycamore Dog Park and Cornwall NY Dog Park.
For other outdoor adventures, head over the Hudson Valley Rail-Trail, which begins by the Hudson River and ends in Highland. A little farther out, you can hike the Fahnestock Trail for beautiful views of the mountain laurel when they are in bloom. There is also the Cornish Estate Trail Loop. After a fire destroyed the main mansion, the rest of the estate fell to ruin, and what is left of it can be seen along your hike.
When you are hungry, Cosimo’s, an Italian restaurant that uses local ingredients from nearby farms, Mahoney’s Irish Pub + Steakhouse, and Akari Sushi & Japanese Food all offer outdoor seating for you and your pets.
