The Benson, a Coast Hotel

Came to Portland for a wedding and our whole family stayed here. Hotel lobby is ornate. Love all the wood. Bar staff was excellent. Our room was on the 12th floor. Great size room and view. Didn't like the size of the bathroom though. Very small and impossible for more than one person in bathroom at a time. Standing shower and no tub. Bed was very comfortable. Very quiet too and great views! Loved opening up windows to hear sounds of the city. Parking with hotel is $40 a day. ( ridiculous ) We decided to selfpark in parking structure on next block for $22 a day. You can access hotel from inside parking garage. Bummer hotel had no pool or jacuzzi. Had a small gym. Elevators were very slow. Seemed like only one was working at a time. Didn't like that maids came in late afternoon.

We had a pleasant stay. The only "issues" I had was the bathroom was a bit on the small side, especially compared to the nice sized room. And the maid service came by later in the afternoon.

everything was fine we had no complaints, we liked especially that you could not use elevator to floors above to get to rooms, without inserting security card

The Benson is a nice hotel in a very good location for exploring downtown Portland. The rooms aren't huge but adequate. The whole place is a little stuffy and ornate for me, but it was a nice stay.

Great location, beautiful hotel. Friendly staff better than Hilton hotel.

The hotel is historic and beautiful. I was disappointed that there was scaffolding in front of hotel making it look lousy and difficult going around it to get to vehicles. And Pioneer Square were under remodel so that was disappointing. The hotel is excellent and the staff were all wonderful. They have piano music in the Palm Restaurant / bar and loved the music during dinner.

Staff was wonderful and very accommodating any time we needed anything. Overall, we enjoyed our stay. Upon check in, we were surprised to see our window view was a brick wall from the building next door. On the upside, there were no windows in that wall, so no need to worry about onlookers. We could see a bit of downtown if we peered out the window and to the left. Overall, really disappointed in the view, especially for the price we paid for the room. There were a total of 3 guests in our room. There was enough space in our room for all three of us—unfortunately, the bathroom sink//vanity/mirror are in the same room with the shower/toilet. We did ok scheduling our bathroom time in order to get ready, but would have been nice to have a larger mirror above the desk to help streamline our efforts so one person could finish getting ready while another person showered, etc. I also wish there were more towel bars in the bathroom, especially since we tried to conserve our towel use. We needed to find creative ways to hang towels to dry. The housekeeper was very helpful when I asked her for a change of towels when I saw her in the hallway.

We had a great time, the receptionist was wonderful. This was probably the fastest check in, I have ever had in a hotel. The hotel was beautiful, the hotel reminds me of the move " The Shining" ( not in a haunted way), but in a very classic modern hotel. The best part of it all, it is walking distance to everything. That was plus, we didnt have to use our car. We will definitely stay here again.

Very nice hotel, excellent staff ! Nicely located in downtown Portland. Within walking distance to many attractions !

Great location. Wonderful place to stay. Staff very helpful. Would stay again.

Love the comfort and ambience of the Benson. Their staff is attentive and professional without being snooty. The in-hotel bar is cozy and well visited. Their rooms and amenities are comfortable and well appointed. Their beds are really great! They are currently undergoing some construction. My only complaints would be that their elevators are extremely slow, especially in the AM rush and that they could probably use some updated remotes for their TVs. Overall, great experience on a consistent basis.

I wouldn't use the coffee shop at the lobby. Otherwise, it is a good hotel. Not the greatest hotel I stayed before.

This was a staycation at a Penthouse suite because it was not much of a premium from the standard room.

The Benson is a great hotel. It's close to the Pearl district and most things downtown. It's an historic property with nice modern, remodeled/updated rooms, and the staff are top notch.

Good location, very comfortable bed -- the staff was terrific.

Excellent service. Tiny bathroom. This is a beautifully maintained old hotel with a great happy hour and wine tasting!

Welcoming staff and very efficient service. The restaurant/bar staff was exceptional. The hotel has a beautiful interior and elegant lobby and restaurant area. Terrific extras like wine served in the evenings and coffee in the mornings. Centrally located downtown, with easy access to restaurants, bars, shopping, and public transportation.

Great. Grand older style hotel in heart of downtown.

I booked a two night stay at the Benson as an Orbitz VIP Platinum member. This hotel is over-priced, and you do not get what you pay for; I would NOT recommend this hotel. The Lobby is the nicest thing about this hotel. Our room was dated (room 930), and paint was peeling off our baseboards. The carpet is old and dirty, and the elevators are very slow. I booked this hotel because the Benson promises Orbitz Platinum members VIP status, which includes room upgrades, if available, and free breakfast. We did not receive an upgrade at check-in (we called the hotel directly, and found that there were better rooms available, but we were not placed in one). We also asked about the free breakfast, and were denied once again. After calling Orbitz, Mae (the Orbitz rep) called the hotel to inquire. Mae was told that Linda (the reservation manager) handles these issues, but after many attempts, Linda could never be reached. Mae left a message for Linda, which was never returned. The next day, I called Orbitz again, and again, Orbitz again tried to reach Linda; Linda was again not available. Orbitz spoke with Ashley, at the front desk, and Ashley refused to honor any VIP amenity to us as a Platinum member. It was an exercise in futility. VIP issue aside, there are better hotels, at a less expensive price. We were very disappointed with this hotel, and would not recommend it to anyone.
