Excellent location in the Gion area of Kyoto. Walking distance to many temples, restaurants, shops, and the subway lines

We got the king size room and it's pretty small. You are basically paying for the location which is about a 10 minute walk from Yasaka Shrine. And right in the middle of the action in terms of food and shopping. What bothered me the most is that I called the front desk to ask how to call another area code in Japan. She had no idea, which isn't a huge deal. She told me she would call me back. They give you a smartphone as the room service phone and I wasn't able to call the front desk with it. I was in a basement room the smartphone wasn't able to connect. When I told her about this she told me to come up to the front desk to find out the information I was asking for. I thought I was the guest. A basic amenity was broken and I had to go to the lobby to get the issue fixed? Every place I have been to will send someone to your room to fix the problem. So I figured out the calling issue with google but there was also no follow up. Maybe I'm being a little petty but for $300 a night they should step up their game on service.

We stayed at another hotel in Osaka and an AirBnb in Tokyo. Kyoto Granbell was by far, the nicest hotel I’ve been in and I’ve been in “nice hotels” like the Westin. The service is impeccable and the bath house is wonderful (and ridiculously clean). It definitely makes me want to try out other Granbell hotels.

Staying in the heart of Gion district, my visit to Kyoto was unique and had the many flavours of what ancient Japan and modern Japan are all together. A rare delicatesse and warm welcoming of the Japanese, little chic boutiques and not to forget the exquisite local cuisine to discover everywhere. Take a walk on the hills too, and enjoy the majesties of Temples and Shrines all around! Walk around the narrow streets of Gion, the colourful Nishiki market and you'll discover many treasures as well as nice people explaining their traditions with great pride. Experiment on your own Kyoto without a map as well ... and be inspired !
