Helsinki hotels

In 2000, the beautiful capitol of Finland, Helsinki, was named a European City of Culture and was then chosen to be a World Design Capital in 2012. Clearly this is a city of distinction. Hotel visitors can choose from inexpensive hostels, bed and breakfasts, apartment hotels, luxury hotels, or even hotels that are environmentally friendly.

Helsinki Quick Tips and Tricks

Helsinki prides itself on being a conference center and offers large venues like Finlandia Hall to smaller restaurants like Event Arena Bank in the center of the city. In between are conference halls and hotels that offer conference centers as well as catering and other amenities.

The dining choices for the hotel visitor are quite varied, from Michelin guide restaurant Alia, to Italian restaurants like La Famiglia.

Major Point of Interest

One place that most hotel visitors should see is the Esplanade Park, which sits near the center of the city and often hosts events such as concerts but is always a place to relax and people watch.

Visitors to Helsinki hotels will find that there are open-air markets and vintage stores and fashion stores such as Beamhill, EDEL City. Helsinki is known for its design, and is also known as a fashionable city; its shopping reflects that.

Helsinki is host to several professional sports teams, including two American Football teams, the Wolverines and the Roosters. Many teams play at Olympic stadium, which was built in the late 1930s.

Hotel Lilla Roberts

Terrific, big boutique

This is a great hotel. Excellent location--a two minute walk from the main drag, with excellent staff, rooms and a lobby you actually want to hang out in. The wooden and leather chairs are terrific. The room, technology, bedding, etc, were all great. The staff, knowing I had to leave early in the morning, had croissants and coffee waiting for me when I came to the lobby to check out. Very thoughtful. Only issues were that the cocktails (while very good) are a bit steep at 15 euro ... though Finland's huge tax on alcohol is probably largely responsible (a good cocktail at the nearby bar Liberty or Death was 12 euro). Also, the hotel would benefit from a hot tub and sauna, especially given how cold Helsinki gets. The gym was also decently equipped, but in a windowless, basement room, so not a desirable place to spend time. But those are minor quibbles. The hotel is excellent and I highly recommend it.

Scandic Simonkenttä

Would stay there again

The hotel is well located, convenient to the train station, buses and trams. Being in the center of town many stores and restaurants are nearby and it is an easily walk-able distance to the harbor and markets. Breakfast was abundant and varied.
