This was our second time staying at the Kowakien Tenyu, and once again it did not disappoint. The main draw for us is the two large hot spring baths which alternate between men and women every other day. One is in a natural setting with a beautiful waterfall and the other is a sleek modern bath with an infinity edge overlooking the mountains. The water is very hot but soothing once you get used to it and minerals in the water is great for arthritis and other aches and pains. The other draw is the fantastic half-board which includes breakfast and dinner. The dinner is a multi course feast for both the eyes and the pallet. This time the breakfast was a buffet which we didn’t like as much as the a la carte offering last time. The rooms are spacious and beautiful with western style beds and tatami mats. They are very clean and well maintained. There’s a bus stop down the hill as well as up the hill. Apparently the hotel provides a free shuttle from Gora station which we didn’t know about in advance. Highly recommend!
Very professional staff that makes your stay a great experience
We booked one night at Kowakien Tenyu but loved it so much we rearranged our itinerary and stayed two. Our room was on the Forrest View side, which we requested by contacting the hotel in advance after reading a review from another traveler. This side provides beautiful views of the hotel gardens and total privacy, which you will want when using your private outdoor onsen bath (the Mountain View side overlooks the parking lot). The room and the entire property are new and absolutely beautiful. The 2 onsen bath areas are male only/female only, but they switch sides every other day so you can experience both. Both have similar baths indoors but the outdoor baths are very different. One has a stunning infinity pool overlooking the lush mountains, and the other is in a more natural setting and is made of stone set directly in front of a waterfall. Both days I had the entire bath area to myself although the hotel was quite full. The restaurant has both tables as well as an area that sits facing large picture windows looking out to a beautiful garden. I suggest requesting this area for breakfast as the view only adds to the experience. We liked the breakfast better than the dinner, although both were tasty and visually works of art. We were treated very nicely by the staff and they were very helpful. There is a bus stop a 2 minute walk from the hotel which will take you to Gora Station, or to Hakone Yumate the other direction. Overall a 5* experience!
Everything is great except: 1. If you try calling hotel after hours nobody answers. 2. If you take the train to the nearest train station....after 6pm....there are no cabs.....its dark and confusing on how to get to the hotel 3. Asked for a mountain view.....got a parking lot view with the side of the main building. They give better rooms to ppl who pay more...stay longer...japaneese....they like repeat customers
