Flights to Fiji
If you are coming from Los Angeles, Japan, or Asia among others, non-stop, direct flights to Fiji are available. The Nadi International Airport (NAN), located on the main island of Viti Levu, has been in use since the British colonial powers built an airstrip there in 1939. Nowadays, it is a center for tourists arriving for island hopping. Airlines serving NAN include Air Pacific, Korean Air, Virgin Australia, and Air New Zealand. While NAN is just as modern as any you will find, the laid-back attitude of the Fiji islanders pervades the atmosphere and creates a comfortable, relaxed beginning or end of your journey into Fiji.
Fiji Weather
Book Flights to Fiji during their dry winter season, which lasts from May to October—the weather is less humid, less rainy with lighter winds and milder temperatures. Costs of airfare and hotels will be higher during this time, with peak costs in June and July. Scheduling Fiji flights during the wet season, from November to April, is much cheaper but it also is the season for tropical storms. The Mamanuca islands, off the west coast of the main island, stay drier during this time.
Getting Around Fiji
Travel on Fiji roads is always an adventure, and not recommended for Sunday drivers. It's actually quite dangerous with pot holes, broken-down bridges, and washouts. If you need to travel by road, Sunbeam Buses are the best choice, with the more expensive option of the Hop-On, Hop-Off tour bus being perhaps the most comfortable. Speed limits are generally ignored, although people will slow down a bit for speed bumps inside the villages. Bicycles are becoming popular, and if you like rugged bike tours, this could be a good choice for you. Remember that motor vehicle traffic is intimidating, and you should bring spares and supplies, as well as lots of water. For two people renting bicycles, the cost is comparable to renting a car.
Fiji Attractions
Fiji flights drop you off in an unspoiled area where the stresses of the world are literally far, far away.
- Koroyanitu National Heritage Park: eco-tourism at its best, with six villages inside the park cooperating to keep nature beautiful.
- The Pearl: championship golf course and country club, a challenging course for even the best golfers.
- King's Road: scenic route through Viti Levu's interior with rugged cliffs and spans of ocean view.
- Wayasewa (Little Waya): volcanic rocks, good beaches, and coral reefs with Naboro villagers welcoming tourist groups.
- Yasawa Islands: with 20 islands, volcanic land, and crystal lagoons, the best way to leave technology and civilization behind you.
