We chose to visit Columbus because of the great reviews and beautiful photos of Shadowlawn, and we're glad we did and highly recommend it. The house and furnishings are simply magnificent. The rooms are stunning and very comfortable, complete with mini fridges stocked with complimentary sodas and water. The owner, Burnette, is wonderfully welcoming and very sweet and kind, going out of her way to ensure you enjoy every part of your stay in her home. My elderly mother mentioned to Burnette that she collects postcards. A few days after we got home, we found a beautiful postcard in the mail, from Burnette, of Shadowlawn. Burnette isn't just the proprietor of Shadowlawn, she becomes your friend. That, in addition to the phenomenal home and furnishings, make Shadowlawn a "must stay" on your trip to Columbus or Mississippi. Enjoy!
Agree, the main floor minus the kitchen is like a museum with treasures of the past and enjoyed hearing about Burnette's many collections. But the bedrooms/baths are not as wonderful as the pictures on the website. They are very run down and dated. We wanted to stay there for the wonderful breakfast menu online and were told on arrival that the menu on line is no longer available. She makes a few of the items ahead of time and freezes them and defrost/cooks them the morning of asking us what we wanted the night before so they weren't made fresh and were nothing special; super disappointed in the monte cristo. The fruit cup was only a cup of grapes- We had rented the nicest room choice to learn upon arrival it was her bedroom and she was going to sleep on her family room couch. Had I know that prior I wouldn't have rented it. It felt uncomfortable to sleep in her bedroom and use her bathroom. The first night we arrived we stayed in another room that was dated and the bathroom had been added years before so it was odd and dated. The website lead me to believe that we were staying in a beautiful room with a gourmet breakfast and that was false. While staying there during the Spring Pilgrimage she told me after booking the room that we would have to be up and out of the room at 8:00AM because it was on the tour but did not discount the price of the room for the inconvience. We ended up not staying in her bedroom due to the fact that walking into the bathroom an area rug slid causing me to lose my balance and fall on the threshold breaking my arm spending the night in the ER. I could not sleep in a bed or vacate "her" room for the tour so we checked in to a hotel. We could not stay in "her room" because my injury forced me to sleep upright in a chair and the high bed etc /furnishings of the room were not injury friendly. We asked her to refund the fee for the nights lodging that we were unable to stay in her home and she said she would pray and think about it. When I disputed the credit card charge she said that we were intoxicated and that is why I fell. We had two cocktails with dinner and the hospital doctor/attendants didn't even ask me if I had a drink. It was an accident / a mishap. She was what appeared to be a genuine individual until it came to money. She appears to be desparate to survive in her home and will do anything to survive. I can't blame her for that. It is her home but what she did was wrong. I guess she needs the money more than I do but it was unbusiness like and felt fraudulent to be charge for a service I could no longer use especially after being injured in her home. The location and the town are wonderful. We just experienced two sides to this woman and honestly her home is a museum on the first floor and wonderful to experience but the lodging is not what the photos show and neither is the food. There are Christian signs in her home which makes me wonder why she feels the need to advertise it when she doesn't act like a Christian taking advantage of a guest like that. I seriously wonder how there are so many positive reviews?
Burnette was absolutely charming, accommodating, and delightful! Staying at Shadowlawn was exactly what I was hoping for and more. It truly is like going back in time. It's also like hiding in a closet in a big antique shop, waiting till the store closes and the doors are locked and spending the night. The bed was super big and comfortable and the room spacious. The breakfast Burnette made for us was scrumptious. I had the Monte Cristo sandwich, my first. The Friendship cemetery, where Memorial Day started is a short walk away, we stumbled upon by accident as we were touring all the Antibellum mansions nearby. After breakfast Burnette gave us a tour of her beautiful home and told us the history. This is what a homestay should be like.
If you visit Columbus or Starkville, staying at Shadowlawn B&B will be an memorable experience. It's location is perfect, posed at the edge of the MUW campus surrounded by verdant trees and other historical homes. This beautifully preserved and elegantly decorated historical treasure welcomes you with an explosion of color, beauty and hospitality's as you walk in it's grand door. Ms. Burnett, the owner ensures your stay will be the best B&B experience you have ever had. She charms you with her friendly caring manner and makes sure your stay is perfect and that you feel like you are her favored guest. The rooms are impeccably clean, decorated masterfully, yet incredibly comfortable although each is historically appointed with period antiques and luxurious linens all providing a colorful feast for your eyes. Each room has a unique style, but all are sure to make each guests stay memorable. I have stayed here with my daughters twice before and this stay was equally as special. The attention to detail, the consideration of each guests needs and just the very presence of peace and love within this mansion gives you a reason to take pause from your busy life and to take time to savor the moment. As you sit at the grand dining room table with other guests and eat the gourmet breakfast set before you, a sense of calm will fall over you. You will be so glad you chose to stay in this special place and I am sure like me you will return again for another stay.
This was my first visit to Shadowlawn but it will not be my last. Burnette made us feel like long lost friends. The home is absolutely beautiful and the hospitality and food was delicious. I absolutely loved the "strawberry soup". Robbie and I will see you again.
This was my second time staying at this bed and breakfast, and once again it was incredible! I spent the night in this beautiful room. (I included a few pictures of the room.) The decorations were stunning! The room was quite big and even had a couch, TV, mini fridge, and desk! Last time I went there was two other groups also staying there, but this time there were more, and I even saw one of the ladies who was there at my last stay! Once again this place impressed me! I had a great conversation with the other guests over our delicious breakfast. The woman who owns the place is very friendly and gives many options for breakfast, pecan casserole to sausage or bacon quiche. ( and more!) This place is definitely worth going to for a first, second, or even more times! I can’t wait to go again!
This weekend I stayed here with my mom, and it was great! I’m sixteen years old and this was my first time ever staying at a bed and breakfast, and I had a fantastic time! The rooms are beautifully decorated and very cozy! In the mornings you get to choose your breakfast and both dishes I had were delicious! It’s very homey and the woman who runs it is so nice! She gave us a tour of the house and told us the history about, and it was so captivating! I’m planning on staying again, and every time I come to Columbus, this will always be my first choice!
My boyfriend and I were in Columbus over the holidays, and we had a wonderful experience at Shadowlawn. The house is beautifully restored and tastefully decorated with Victorian-era antiques. The owner, Burnette, in addition to being very accommodating and hospitable, is very knowledgeable about the history of the house. Definitely ask her for a tour! She also makes amazing breakfast - I highly recommend the strawberry soup and the sausage bread pudding. The dining room is absolutely beautiful. We stayed in the Victorian master suite, which was very comfortable. Everything was quite clean, and we had no complaints. Will definitely be back!
My husband and I visited "Shadowlawn" to celebrate our anniversary. It was a wonderful experience for both of us because of the magnificent stay and hospitality of the owner, Burnette! Here are the highlights of our experience: # We felt that Shadowlawn is more beautiful than the pictures in website. It has more interesting and beautiful things to enjoy. # One of the most enjoyable features of Shadowlawn is its wonderful breakfast prepared and served by Burnette! We have never experienced such gorgeous breakfast dishes in any place so far. # Shadowlawn's every single place is decorated in Victorian fashion with Victorian-aged beautiful amenities. It gave us a feelings that we were in Victorian time during our stay. Burnette treated us so nicely that we thought we were at home outside of our own home!
Shadowlawn was the best! This B&B is a trip back in time. I could've spent hours just roaming about looking at what can only be explained as true Southern history. For breakfast, the MonteChristo and Strawberry Soup were to die for. Ms. Burnette, the owner is indeed at its best. 5 stars aren't enough.
