Probably my last stay at this lovely hotel (because I've moved back to the UK), one last business trip, so I thought I'd share a new review. It's still got real impact, the open foyer space is just as light and beautiful as it was when I first stayed here many years ago. And the clean minimal design of the rooms still look great. However, look closer, and it's starting to look a bit tired, especially in the bathrooms where I feel the wooden showers and wooden baths aren't looking as pristine as they were. The breakfast is lovely. The location is great for nightlife, but be aware that many taxis will refuse to bring you here in the evenings because it can get gridlocked. This can be really annoying, so make sure you want to spend time in this area. Another draw back of the area is that rooms on the side of the hotel near the nightlife can be very noisy.
In deed a very good hotel closely located to the Sanlitun attractions. If you have business in the area I would not hesitate to recommend this place. I personally found the hotel wifi to be a bit overwhelmed in early evening hours but there is plenty else to do in the comfortable and opulent rooms.
We booked this modern style hotel at the recommendation of our travel agent. The style is quite modern and the service quality is old world excellence. Pros -Hotel location is prime with lots of shopping and restaurant options within walking distance. -The complimentary minibar is a delight after a long day of touring to hang in the room with a beer or soda. -The breakfast restaurant just off the lobby is excellent. We enjoyed the option of Asian or western style food. The best dumplings I had the entire trip! -Bed is VERY comfortable and the amenities are quality. I rarely wash my hair with hotel provided shampoo, I did this time and was delighted. -The evening gifts of face mask, lip balm, lotion were such a wonderful surprise and fantastic quality. -The hotel will order taxis for you at no charge. They are significantly better quality than the ones you hail on the street. Same price, better quality. And smoke free! -The front desk staff is VERY responsive and no is not in their vocabulary. Super helpful and always cheerful. Areas for improvement -Pool water is chilly and no jacuzzi. -Shower in rooms is open, so if you are sharing with a friend - have to plan for showers and bathing. -Sometimes staff isn’t fluent in English and would struggle to answer questions and due to language gave incorrect info. -Couches are VERY low to the ground. Tall people are those limited with mobility would be in trouble. A few chairs of normal height in the lobby are needed. And the option to bring one to the room would make the hotel an options for more people. -Street noise on one side of the hotel is a problem for light sleepers. Request a room off the street if you need it. Overall A definite win and will recommend to friends. The style took a bit to adjust to but we really liked it. The friendliness of the staff made the stay a real delight.
One of the most notable hotels in China - especially considering it opened "early" in 2008 - the Opposite House is a masterpiece by Japanese starchitect Kengo Kuma. Unlike most five star hotels, the Opposite House has a look and feel of it's own and did not aim to cater to the tastes of mainstream affluent classes of the moment. Needless to say, this is probably the best location for experiencing contemporary Beijing on foot. Unless you want to find something in the hutongs, I couldn't recommend another area other than Sanlitun. The Mesh bar has a great happy hour from 6 to 8 on weekdays and used to be quite a gathering point at some point in time.
After so many years of opening, this hotel is still one of the best in town, the service, the decoration, the room, and the food. I travel a lot and usually sleep very well every time I stay. It gives me a feeling of being home. And of course, the proximity to all the trendy places in the area, the restaurants, bars, shops, etc., gives a big plus.
stayed at this hotel for a work trip. the staff went out of their way to welcome me and provide excellent service throughout my stay. Hospitality was some of the best I ever expereinced, which made me feel like I was on a vacation getaway. they were helpful in providing tip about navigating around the city and finding local spots to visit and tour during my short stay, rooms were impeccable and upscale/modern. beautiful tub and shower that gives a spa like experience. plenty of on property restaurants. I'm not adventurous with my food so appreciated that the hotel had a good mix of western and authentic local food. gym was also pretty decent with a beautiful pool. I'm planning to visit this hotel again with friends next year!
The Opposite House and their teams always make for a refreshing and enjoyable stay. The hotel is a work of art in itself and the Guest Experience team welcomes you with open arms. I'm a big breakfast fan and have to say, the Village Cafe has one of the best in China with a great smoothie (bowl) selection. This trip I also tried their Chinese restaurant Jing Yaa Tang, which was fantastic with extremely attentive service. The Opposite House is highly recommended.
Really Nice Hotel with very good service. We had arranged a hotel car to pick us up from the airport and the service was really good. No hassle, no panic, everything went better as expected. Hotel room was spacy and full of light, though the location against the street in the second floor wasn't the best one. Weekend trafic on the street outside (Sanlitun Road) was quite heavy and continued to early hours. Earplugs helped. Warm recommendations and we will be back, once in Beijing.
From beginning to end, The Opposite House team went above and beyond to create the most special and memorable weekend for us, celebrating our first wedding anniversary. The level of anticipation at various touch points was incredible. One example was GE Marlborough, who was so helpful in calling us 5 mins before our train was scheduled to arrive in Beijing to update us where the driver would be waiting for us. Paul, Mark and Arno made us feel at Home immediately with the amazing arrival experience- it really felt like being greeted by family! We had the most stunning meal at Sureno, probably my best one of this year, which is a big shout coming from a gluten free vegan! We were totally blown away by the whole dining experience thanks to the super star team of Mostafa, Rebecca, and Elaine. Our personalised menus were the icing on the cake and just such a thoughtful touch. Most heartfelt thanks to Paul, truly is the best Guest Liaison Manager in the world, consistently present to touch base with guests, making us feel so special and well taken care of! Cannot wait to come back soonest!
The Opposite House is beautiful and thoughtful. Gorgeous architecture, spacious rooms, delicious restaurants and attention to every detail make it a delightful place to stay. Paul and the rest of the staff took great care of us. It couldn't have been better!
