I stayed here with two of my friends ages 20-21 for a budget get away (or as budget as we could for venice!) The hotel was quaint, a bit rusty but decent for the price. The room was small for a 3 bed with a tiny shower and small area with a mirror for getting ready. The room did not have wifi which is a let down for this era. The breakfast wasn't a buffet and did not have much to offer. Having said this, the location was as soon as you get to the main Venice station. It was perfect for browsing at your leisure, taking evening strolls, or even going back to the hotel mid day and going back out again; It was near enough to do all of this! The area wasn't in a small thin street, it was very open so we knew where to go and not get lost. The staff at the front desk were very quiet and arguably a bit short with us, being young they might have thought we were stupid but we aren't! Overall, I was happy with the price and result of the trip.

Absolutely horrible hotel. Please, do not stay here. This is a review for Room 130 and our experience with the front desk gentleman. I've been to Venice before and generally stay at nicer hotels. I am currently on vacation with a European friend, and to assist with accommodating her budget, I looked into this hotel. What a mistake that was. When we arrived, the gentleman behind the desk went into a slick sales spiel of how the room we booked on was an "Economy" room with an external bathroom and no breakfast included (we knew this and were ok with it), however for a more expensive price he would upgrade our room to a room with a bathroom in the room. The price wasn't too different, so we agreed. He also advised as our room didn't have breakfast included, for a price of €20, payable to him in cash, he would mark down that we were to get breakfast. Again, I stress, he asked for this in cash - so either he was stealing from us, or stealing from the hotel he worked for. We were tired, and I was already frustrated because I could tell this man was trying to take advantage of us assuming we were dumb tourists. My friend, sensing my frustration level, paid the gentleman the €20. He put the money directly into his wallet. Why would he put the money into his wallet if we were paying for breakfast?! Shouldn't that money have gone to the hotel? After all of this, he then told us the room we "upgraded" to with the bathroom inside was actually a "smaller" room!! He kept saying, "but there is a bathroom inside!". My heart sank, and I realized we had just been cheated. He took us for tourists, promised an upgrade, but then as soon as we paid, told us we were actually getting a smaller room. We walked to Room 130 and it was a joke. Please note, this is not my first time in Europe. Not even my second or third. I've been to Europe countless times and am familiar with the traditional European-style room. However, this was not a suitable room - the furniture was broken (the door on the clothes closet), there were five mis-matched hangers (three of which were metal and bent), and almost no bedding whatsoever. It was a top-sheet and an extremely thin blanket and duvet. The bathroom did not even have a proper shower - just a corner in which to stand to take a shower. There was no mini-bar as promised online. There were no power outlets anywhere in the room; only one in the bathroom. It was obvious this room had at one point served another purpose and had been converted. Folks, I've stayed in small hotel rooms before. Once, in Barcelona, I had a room almost the size of a large walk-in closet, but it was beautifully appointed, and the hotel staff had been up front and honest and gave me a substantial discount. This front desk clerk promised us an upgrade and under-delivered. We would have been better off staying with our original room and not having breakfast. After being in the room less than 5 minutes, I told my friend we were not staying here, and I went room hunting at various hotels nearby. Thankfully, I remembered the Antiche Figure hotel from walking past it my last visit to Venice, so I crossed the Canal, walked over, explained my situation, and asked about vacancy. They were happy to oblige, and for only a bit more than we were paying at Universo, we got a beautifully appointed room, with a gorgeous bathroom (with a bath, a bidet, and marble flooring and countertops!). The staff at Antiche Figure are incredible and professional and when they asked where we were coming from, and we told them Universo Nord, the front-desk staff smiled and simply said, "Ahh yes, we know of them." But they were too professional to say anymore. By the way, the front desk staff were all dressed in suits. The gentleman at Universo was not dressed professionally for his position. I know money can be tight for people; I understand that. But as much as we say, "Oh I'm just going to sleep here" when it comes to saving money at a hotel room, it really does make all the difference. This is your vacation; every aspect should be special. There is absolutely nothing special about Universo Nord. Run away. Run far away.

This hotel is not a luxury type, but it gives travelers to taste the local living style. It has many rooms and around 4-levels, but only stairs and room don't have air conditioning, therefore when traveling during summer time, you may suffer from heat and mosquito. But when in winter time, it gives you a funny feeling when opening those wooden-window blinds. Staffs are nice and the location is not too far from bus/train station, as well as supermarket and restaurants. But if looking for luxury type hotel or elderly travelers, this will not be your good options. Beside, this hotel doesn't provide free wifi or complementary drinking water, so better be prepared before the checking in.

The hotel is just an average place and maybe OK for 1 night stay. Room was very small and not very well maintained. The person at reception was rather unfriendly. We reached a little early around 8.30 am while check in time was 11. While i requested them if an early checkin was possible, the reception staff said a No (which is understandable). But the funny part was that they insisted in keeping my original passport to even book the room for me. The guy kept on insisting that it would be safe with him. I got suspicious and did not agree. So he went ahead and booked without the passport. God knows why he asked for the original in the first place if he did not really need it. Breakfast spread was good. But the best part was the location. Everything is in stones throw distance.

This is really a 2-star hotel overall. The location is excellent with many decent restaurants around, but the hotel itself is very old and rooms smell unpleasant; the wifi was so slow we could not use it, and there was no hot water from shower in one of the baths, which was a pure nightmare. Would not recommend unless location was your first priority.

The hotel is not very luxurious but its at the best location. RIght next to Venice train station/water taxi and grand canal. There are a lot of places to eat and shop nearby. Free breakfast is ok. Overall an OK place to be.

This hotel is very conveniently located, close to major railway (2 minutes walk) & amongst shops & restaurants and all Condoler & water taxi services Rooms clean & reasonable space for 3 people. There is no lift & this could be a problem for some

The location was convenient for us, the breakfast reasonable, however, even though the staff efforts were visible, the conditions are bad, nosy (cardboard plaster-walls: you can hear ALL). Due to the price, the fellow "guests" are the worst, groups of students, all kinds of uncivilized types, always in groups, so if you don't care for sleeping, this is the place for you.

Only one of the staff is very rude and vulgate and makes you feel you are stupid. Try to avoid him. No lift. You can find somebody to help you carry your luggage. One of the staff gave us all of the attractions we need to visit there. Excellent location beside the central station. Nice breakfast.

We traveled to Venice by train, and leaving by train early in the morning so this hotel is perfect for us since it is located few minutes away from the train station. The room is clean and the bed is comfortable, however, the walls are thin that you can hear people talking and walking pass outside your room. Breakfast is adequate and they have no internet policy at the breakfast area.
