Howard Johnson by Wyndham Sault Ste Marie ON2.0 out of 5.0

I always like to stay at the Howard Johnson on Trunk Rd in Sault Ste Marie. The staff is so friendly and helpful. I have never had a bad experience staying there. Now mind you the rooms are being updated because all previous owners didn't bother to do so. Furniture & carpeting is outdated but always very clean. Once it's refurbished, it will be the best place ever. I find it close to amenities and a lot quieter than most hotels on busy streets. I will stand beside them through all renovations. It's my favorite place to stay.
I had to try two different beds to get one that didn’t have a really old mattress. The TVs are 1990s which I unplugged to turn off. Staff were great. Clean
Desk clerk was very friendly and helpful but room was cold and uncomfortable. Pillows on bed were terrible, sheets didn't fit properly, no blankets on bed. There was hair in the bathroom, no Kleenex in room. Remote didn't work properly. Wallpaper was peeling in the room. Drove around to front of hotel to check out but the front door was locked, had to go back through room to get to front counter. Staff was setting up breakfast so no one to check us out properly.
The manager of this hotel made me feel extremely uncomfortable with his behavior. If I had not been desperate for accomodation due to weather and road conditions I would not have stayed. I never expected to feel so unsafe in a hotel. I actually pushed a chair up against the door even after putting the chain on it. I would strongly advise any woman travelling alone to avoid staying here at all costs. I would also advise anyone expecting a clean, servicable room to do the same. Howard Johnson needs to re-evaluate the sort of people they have managing their properties and the condition of the properties they have operating under their name.
Staff was more than helpful and was proactive in helping me coordinate my travels. If you are travelling the Soo you definitely consider staying here! You will be pleasantly surprised with their knowledgeable and friendly staff. This is now my number one place to stay in the Soo. (period) God Bless this Property and their staff +:-)
The room was very clean and the staff was accommodating and amazing, extremely friendly. The carpeting needs renewing but as long as the room is clean and the TV, microwave and bathroom work , that's what is important to me when I travel. Every time I come to Sault Ste Marie, it's the hotel I go to all the time and have been going to for years now. It's close to everywhere I want to go.
Wyndham resorts had better review this hotel. Dirty, cigarette smelling, sheets wrinkly, doors cracked, looked like a seedy place where hookers and bar brawlers spend time. I was absolutely disgusted, afraid and slept in my clothes. $100 per night for this hotel??? The staff was nice enough and on first appearance in the lobby assumed maybe renovations were taking place in front. Not so...if my husband had not stopped me I was going to sleep in my vehicle. I will be calling Wyndham directly to express my disappointment.
The room needs some minor maintenance, Hall doorway was difficult to open or close (Swelled or too much paint). Clock Radio clock set did not work. Tired facility but good for a quick stop and snooze.
Very dirty hotel. If you're around this hotel and you need a place to stay just sleep in your car.
After a long day on the road my boyfriend and I weren't expecting to stay in an amazing hotel. We had already been staying in cheap hotel/motels on our trip home so we didn't have high expectations. But upon checking in the front desk agent wasn't anything near pleasant. Once we got into our room it was freezing. So we try putting the heat on but the heater is broken. It would have been fine if there was an actual blanket of some sorts provided on our bed. Just two sheets and the thinnest duvet I have ever seen. (I've seen nicer linens in hostels) Not to mention the sheet had a stain on it. The room was in some serious need of an update, as well as cleaning. We found cobwebs throughout our room and it didn't look like its been vacuumed in a while.
