Hotel Domus Romana

Horrible hotel with unfriendly staff. A/C didn't work and manager's response was that this wasn't American A/C. This "4 star" hotel was a joke. Shower socket was hanging loose on the wall and when the desk was notified, they said they had no one to do repairs - borrowed a screwdriver and fixed it myself. When I asked the desk clerk to confirm my morning airport pickup he said that I could call the number myself. Just plain rude.

We stayed at the Domus Romana for one week and I think the best way to review it would be good points and bad points. Let's start with the good points, which shouldn't take too long; 1. The location is excellent. Easy walking distance to all the main tourist spots and surrounded in good bars and restaurants. 2. Housekeeping - they work very hard to maintain the standards of cleanliness. Now for the bad points; 1. Apart from one or two of the reception staff all other staff appeared to ignore guests, especially at breakfast, not so much as a 'good morning'. Not the friendliest bunch of hosts you could find. 2. Our double room was 'pokey' and extremely hot, the air conditioning appeared to be very very dated and struggled to keep the room cool. 3. One of the main selling points for us was the terrace area but upon arrival we were told that guests were no longer allowed to use it, only staff were. 4. The bar was open from 4.30pm to 1030pm, not as advertised on their website. The 'bar' is within their courtyard which is lovely, but you are not able to eat or drink anything unless you have to purchased it from the bar. Which means grabbing a sandwich or a bottle of wine to enjoy after a day out enjoying the city is not allowed. 5. The coffee from the machine at breakfast has to be the most vile tasting coffee in the world. I mean come on guys, this is Italy, make an effort. The hotel is very dated and looks tired. It could do with some upkeep. I have tried not to make this too negative as we loved Rome but advertising it as a 4 star means you have to keep up a 4 star standard, and this one most definitely was not. Would I stay here again - No Would I recommend this hotel to friends or family - sorry, no again.

We stayed here for a week and enjoyed the fact that we could walk to everything. I'm thinking everything was downhill to the sites that we walked to. Easy walk down Via. National to Colosseum, Forum, etc. Also easy walk to Trevi Fountain but...uphill all the way back. We used the on off bus and that helped for coming back from some of our walks. We were given ( I think) room 105. Small room facing the street, carpet, big bathroom. No chance in h..would I stay in that room. Moved next day to 114. Room has small balcony with bistro table and 2 chairs. Lovely petunia hanging container and we faced into the courtyard The A/C was on 24/7 and did cool the room a bit. The bed was fine the sheets changed 3 times while we were there. The towels were replaced whenever we put them in the tub as used. The shower was not great. Step gingerly over a high tub and use one of those gizmos to spray yourself. Small area. Getting out was equally dicey.. We like having a fridge and bought some meats cheese and olives to have with a drink before we went out. There are 2 great supermarkets with all you need. One is across the street slightly to the right. The larger one is around the corner on Nationale down about 7 stores. Nationale is a one minute walk. Breakfast was fine. Yogurt, cereals, ham, salami, cheese, sliced tomatoes and cucumbers. Croissants..sweet and savoury . Different types of breads to toast. Fresh fruit tray. Scrambled eggs, bacon. Plus lots of sweets..There is a machine that makes different kinds of coffee etc. I suggest that you bring your mug from home as teeny cups. Very friendly boy from the Philipinnes cleans up and replenishes the food trays. Wifi in room was very spotty BUT I found a great place to get it. Go to the 4 th floor terrace. Lots of beautiful plants, and seating overlooking the courtyard We had a drink up there one night and it was great. Quiet and lots of stars. I will add pictures. Anyway excellent connection for wifi there. Rooms ending in an even number appear to be the ones facing the courtyard. When we arrived and I went to complain about room 105 they said " but you never emailed us that you wanted a balcony ". Thus find the email address and let them know. Would I return? Possibly due to location and great reasonable restaurants nearby. ( across the street we went to Berzittelo 3 times plus had take out salad another night) By the way they have other " things" that are not on the menu such as spaghetti and meat sauce..11 euro. Excellent friendly front desk. Thanks especially to Daniel..

One of the worst hotel experiences. Stayed for 4 nights. Hotel staff, especially the manager, are extremely unhelpful. Wifi drops constantly but staff deny the problem and blame individuals' phones. Only 1 bath towel in room for 2 people! Room with carpet smelled and manager refused to change room. Only toiletries supplied over 5 days were 2 small shower gels and a small exfoliating soap (for 2 people in very hot temperatures). Not restocked during entire stay. No coffee in room. Free breakfast was inedible and the coffee was particularly vile. Would never stay here and don't recommend at all. Building is not bad but very badly managed. Zero sense of concern for patrons.

This hotel was very central to the Colosseum and other major sights in Rome which was exactly what we wanted. We had a room overlooking the courtyard and our own balcony which was really nice. We had a lot of space but it is a very old hotel and needs a few repairs.

This Hotel ticks all the boxes for a family friendly (basic) weekend away. After reading some of the reviews I was a little nervous about staying here but my fears were thwarted immediately on arrival. After a late check in all my requests through booking.com to the hotel everything I had asked for was catered for. A triple family room with a view. Very clean but a worn but hey it's an old building with plenty of modern additions. Wifi for instance. I stayed in 504 and we had our own balcony with rattan furniture and parasol overlooking the quaint fountain in the courtyard below at the back of the building and another small balcony to the front facing the narrow streets poles apart but served its purpose. The bathroom was clean and perfect for 3 of us ladies sharing. We all felt very safe here. Breakfast (7-10am) was included and we were never disappointed. It caters for meat eaters and veggies alike especially if you have a sweet tooth. It's perfectly acceptable to have chocolate for breakfast here. The staff are very friendly, capable, professional, approachable, fluent in English and served extremely well. The hotel is a little gem a few mins walk from Barberini metro. It's in a fantastic location the metro system is easy to navigate once you get the gist. I recommend you purchase a day metro pass or 2 day pass depending on how long you are hoping to stay for unlimited usage and a very comfortable pair of shoes there'll be lots of walking. I would book here again it was just perfect. Know this, it is not 5 star it is a little tired but serves its purpose admirably well. From the moment we entered the building to check out we were happy. It's unseasonably warm in Rome at the moment so pack light it topped 33* but great in the shade. I cannot recommend this weekend escape for couple/ families on a budget I found it to be exceptional. My only concern would be watch your bags whilst walking around Rome there are a good few pesky little thieves/pickpockets but they are professionals you won't see them coming and they're gone before you realised you've been robbed, in some cases they work in teams. You'd almost admire their efforts if it wasn't so crook! I'd recommend under the arm zip up bags for your belongings. Keep vigilant and invest in a decent crook proof bag. They love rucksacks so don't keep any valuables in them if you're wearing one. If you're looking to eat near notable Piazza's don't be afraid to go off the beaten track or a few streets away from these attractions for meals. They are exceptional meals at every stop and considerably more affordable if you're on a budget. Try not to order a Cappuccino after 11am it's not considered appropriate and don't just ask for a latte it's a mug of hot milk and the server mightn't want to change that and they will expect payment for what you asked for, consult your phrase book for a better understanding. I'd highly recommend you book this hotel it has to be one of the best budget hotels I've found and I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again, fabulous location staff and food. I understand they serve cocktails in the courtyard from 4.30pm to 10.30pm I didn't sample it but it looked really good. I hope you have as much fun in the Eternal City and we did and the hotel was the yummy icing on the cake.

Our family of four stayed at this hotel and loved it. The room was a great size and we had a large balcony overlooking the beautiful courtyard. We loved having a glass of wine in the afternoon to escape the hectic streets of Rome for some romantic quite time. They also served some light food which was lovely. The staff were very friendly and helpful also. We would stay here again.

"Very European" (4 star European, not the standard Marriott) The hotel entrance is small and hidden, however it is off a main road. It is well located between the Trevi Fountain and Colosseum. The road it is on has many small shops and convenience stores, little middle to luxury shopping. Definitely great for location. The bed... very uncomfortable. Typical European bed with two twin mattresses together. The room was spacious with average wifi connection and very fast & friendly service from the hotel. We sent laundry to be pressed and had it back within a few hours. The garden outside is very pretty and every floor has a terrace. Better bathroom than standard European hotels. Poor air conditioning. Large and french door style windows/doors.

Hotel is in the heart of the city within walking distance to the Coliseum, Trevi Fountain and Spanish steps. there are lots of nice restaurant's in the area. Our rooms were large 402 & 206 were very comfortable and spacious we slept well as the beds were comfortable to. The staff were very pleasant and helpful, breakfast ok the cocktail bar served a variety of choice with a dish of crisps on the side all in the lovely courtyard.

Hotel Domus Romana, this hotel is situated in the heart of the city. You would not believe it when in room or courtyard garden, soooo quiet. Good rooms, safe and minibar, cooked and buffet breakfast, afternoon/evening bar with great staff. Most of all ...great prices !!.
