Smart Hyde Park View - Hostel2.0 out of 5.0

35 staff had booked in the hostel for 2 weeks while working at Hyde park, several of the staff got bite. At first we thought it was just one room that had got the issues But after my boss got the room swapped I had got more. The floor was dirty and the mattress even worse. Please don't stay there with kids.
I spent one night here, it is an ok hostel. The location is good, you can take the heathrow express to Paddington Station and it is a 15 minute walk to the hostel. The hostel is clean, but the rooms are small at best, and crammed I guess to make as much money as possible. My room was a 6 person room, with two sets of three bunks, and the top bunk let me tell you is slightly terrifying. The room did have its own bathroom which was nice but was so small that we barely had space for luggage, and opening your luggage was not even an option. It seems typical for London but I probably would not stay there again. The location was good, you can walk to Hyde park, and it is possible to walk to the British Museum, and easy to get to Victoria Station from which it is possible to get to Westminster Abbey, Buckingham palace, London bridge etc.
I chose a mix shared room for 8 people and it was very tiny. We had 3 beds one uppon the other one so it means that you could choose to sleel on the floor, in the middle or attached the ceiling. The bed on the lower lever had the mattress on the floor without any support. And the bed on the highest level had just like 45 cm to the ceiling. On the floor there is moquette (not hygienic at all). And the bathroom was so tiny, no space to move. Anyway it's in a good position and the price was the cheapest in London!
I'm surprised there are so many bad reviews. I mean, what do people expect for such a low price? I stayed here for 6 days in an 8 person dorm and really have nothing to complain about. Ok, maybe just about a lift - it was quite slow; and that it was quite hot in the room (no aircon, only one fan), but we opened the window so all was fine. Room, beds and bathroom were clean. Location is great. Staff is very friendly, polite and helpful. Also: - power sockets: each bed in my room had its own power socket - the hot water: at first I thought there was no hot water, but I just kept turning the shower handle till I got it
The rooms doesn't have space for 9 people. You can't open your luggage locker at the same time. There is only one bathroom per room and it's not clean actually and you will find just ONE SHOWER. You must go to the ground floor to use the only one bathroom available for the rest of the hostel, which one doesn't have shower neither. The worst thing is that there are only two plugs and if u ask for extensions, they don't have any to lend you. The staff is useless and the breakfast is very simple.
I have been to many hostels and literally this hostel has the worst coffins, I mean beds, ever. I took a while struggling to enter my bed. It's a three-beds row and each bed has a space height of 50 cm, it's awful, and definitely will not repeat this misery again. Other than that it has good location and clean.
Positives: -Location. Really close to tube stations, Paddington and bus routes. Right by Hyde Park. -Has free wifi (I only used it to download a podcast and go on FB, it was sufficient for this) -Lockers in room are good for storing valuables or small bags/suitcases Negatives: -Unbelievably hot. I was in an 8 person dorm and it was impossible to sleep with the heat. We had the windows open and the little fan going but it was awful. I understand that London doesn't normally get so warm so might not always be such a problem. -Only 2 power sockets in the room and not even close to the beds. I'd suggest packing or buying a multi plug to increase the number of sockets. -Cold showers. I am sure there must be some hot water at some point in the day but I never got any. Not the Hostel's fault but a general comment about sharing a room in a hostel - please don't get up at 4:00am and dry your hair for 15 minutes and then continue to get ready with the light on for an hour. I was staying for 3 nights but ended up paying for a hotel room for the second night as I needed to sleep. Unfortunately I couldn't find a hotel for the 3rd night, so went back to the hostel :( There is free breakfast but I didn't eat it so can't comment. £5 to buy a towel, which I was happy to pay. No soap/shampoo but you can buy it at reception.
Arrived and was greeted by staff who were helpful. Shown to our hostel room, and it was much smaller than I could ever have imagined. Fitting 8 people in such a room seemed a stretch, but it was achieved. This caused the room to be so unbearably hot, it was impossible to sleep. Upon arriving, we were asked to purchase padlocks (as two of us didn't have our own) for £4 each. Mine didn't work, and I was unable to access my luggage for over 2 hours the following morning. Meaning I was left waiting in my night clothing whilst the receptionist called for a maintenance officer who could come and fix my problem. I requested my £4 back, seeing as the padlock had not served its purpose and I was left without any access to my luggage for 2 hours. This request was denied, without any real reason as to why this was. I suggested that giving me my money back surely wouldn't be a problem, given that I had endured enough already by not being able to have a shower or change my clothes at least, however this money was not returned to me. Having one shower and toilet between 8 people was also a huge fault of this hostel. It was often the case that there was a queue to use the toilet/shower, meaning no one could go about their business in a quick fashion if need be. Overall, the hostel was clean and served its purpose. I wouldn't return here again, but for the price, it didn't seem a bad idea to begin with.
Firstly, let's start with the good. For the price, you won't find a better location. It's a five minute walk to the nearest tube and situated right at the side of Hyde Park. The reception staff are friendly and helpful, and the rooms were clean. There is a small lift to all floors, so there's no stair climbing needed. There's is no curfew, so I would definitely recommend this hostel if you need somewhere to crash after a night out or gig. The ensuite bathrooms were clean, the showers were a good temperature and the hostel sells essentials in case you forget anything. Other reviews have mentioned the wifi being slow, but it was perfect for me - maybe they've done the upgrades now? Now the bad. The room was hot. I know there has been a bit of a heatwave recently, but this was unreasonably hot. There is a small fan that seems to only blow on one bed (in the six bed dorm I was in), and even then it was very inefficient. It made it almost impossible to sleep, and really needs sorting out before this becomes a go-to place for me. Aircon is almost essential in a dorm, otherwise it gets hot and muggy very quickly. When the heat situation gets sorted, I wouldn't have a bad thing to say about it. Probably better to stay here in winter for now.
Myself and three other friends stayed here for one night and we booked into a 6 bedroom mixed dorm. The room had its own bathroom that was dirty, the room was stuffy and hot with a small fan. There was only two plugs for the 6 of us. Common room was nice, friendly staff. Breakfast was very basic, toast, cereal and instant coffee.
