Stretched along the Mississippi River, La Crosse in Wisconsin is one of the prettiest cities you will find in the state. Whether you want to stroll in the beautiful outdoors or enjoy La Crosse’s entertainment and arts scene, you will find plenty to do in this small city no matter your preference.
Where to Stay in La Crosse, Wisconsin
Most hotels are located in downtown La Crosse, right by the river. There are plenty of restaurants, bars, cafes, and more to keep you entertained day and night. A particular local favorite is the The Wine Guyz, which serves a number of craft beers and specialty wines. Once you have quenched your first, check out Hixon House, which dates back to the 1850s and is a great example late Victorian life.
Looking to get outside to enjoy the scenery? Then, stay near any of La Crosse’s parks or country clubs. Pettibone Park has been open since 1901 and is great for kayaking, canoeing, and fishing. Plan a picnic or take a walk around Myrick Park. Alternatively, you can hit up the fantastic wooden playground if you are traveling with kids and want them to get their exercise fix. Next, go for a walk or run in Riverside Park for the best views of the Mississippi, and head to Viroqua Country Club to work on your golf swing.
Even if you are not religious, you may want to visit the mesmerizing Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Fairly new, the shrine is the first Catholic structure to be designed classically in over half a century and has acres of beautiful gardens. For a little more adventure head to any of the mountains or bluffs near La Crosse. Trempealeau Mountain is great for hiking as are Brady’s Bluff Prairie and Perrot State Park. For the most scenic view of the city, though, you will want to visit Grandad Bluff.
Should you be interested in Wisconsin’s wine scene, you may want to stay near the many wineries and vineyards near La Crosse. Moreover, why not stop by the Elmaro Vineyard in nearby Trempealeau, Branches Winery in Westby, or
