We stayed in the studio for 6 days. The place is clean, comfortable, and best of all has an amazing view from the lanai! Also the view from the property is quite breath taking too. Soaking at night in the tub was so relaxing and drinking fresh squeezed orange juice from the garden was so refreshing! The black sand beach is quiet and peaceful, and the hikes and views into Waipi'o valley are so magical. Paula and Dan were so nice and welcoming and very helpful. Dan even drove us all the way to the Kona airport (a 1 1/2 hr drive ) in the morning when we couldn't get a lyft ride! You really can't beat that type of kindness and hospitality!
We stayed her just before Hurricane Lane hit in August of 2018. We'd spent time on the other side of the island but wanted to come over and hike into the Waipio Valley. We were a large family group in two of the cottages and could not have been happier. Amazing views, the kids loved going into the orchard to pick fruit, we cooked wonderful meals in the kitchens and loved sitting out in the decks just looking at the view. Though please, don't miss walking down to the very edge of the property and sitting on the bench there, which has to be the most amazing view I've ever had in Hawaii. Dan was incredibly helpful, checking in, bringing extra blankets, making sure we had everything we needed. When it started to get windy due to the hurricane, he came and made sure we parked away from the ironwood trees, which he knew from experience can drop branches in high winds. Overall it was a perfect family get-away. A positive, for us, was that the WiFi wasn't always that strong, which forced the kids to interact with us. We played card games and had a great time. There was Wifi, but it wasn't always at full strength. But we were happy about that.
Hale Kukui is a place that everyone should visit. By far one of the most spectacular places we have been to... and to top it all off we were lucky enough to have our destination wedding there! To be so lucky, to have our special day in such a special place!! Views that are among the best you can get, a magical little creek and swimming hole (that was one of the highlights on our whole trip), absolutely stunning gardens that look over the ocean, peaceful and quiet at night and nice and cool making for a restful sleep... really I could go on and on! Then you have Paula and Dan that are the most welcoming and helpful hosts, they made us feel right at home and were there to help with any and all requests. Honestly I can't give this place and the hosts enough praise. Whether you are thinking about having a romantic getaway, a family holiday or having a destination wedding... you really can't go past Hale Kukui. We will be back... again and again!!
I really hate to write reviews about places that I really like, afraid it will be all booked up if I want to go again. I stayed here 25 years ago just after it opened. I always remembered the gorgeous view, and it is still there! We happily spent 4 days here and just wandered around this side of the island. Come home and sit on the deck look at the view with a glass of wine, ahh heaven. We didn't cook but got take out and brought it back and ate lots of fruit. :-)) The small town has 2-3 good restaurants. Love this place and location.
Hale Kukui is a dream! Incredible property, w SPECTACULAR views!!! staying here is really all about the setting. we could have spent all day sitting on the bench overlooking the Pacific Ocean and the cliffs descending to the Waipio Valley. This is not a fancy resort with tons of amenities, so do not go there expecting this or you will be let down. It is, however, very comfortable and inviting. Our cottage (Orchard Studio) was well kept, well equipped, clean, functional, cozy and had an INCREDIBLE view!!! The kitchen is equipped to cook your own meals and there is a grill on the deck. We didn’t cook, but brought back food from a great restaurant in town (10-15 mins down the road) and ate on the deck watching the sunset. Paula and Dan a great hosts, there for whatever you need, but give you all the space and privacy you desire. We really enjoyed having a drink w Paula on the lawn outside the main house one evening. The orchard is cute, and you are free to pick and eat whatever fruit is in season during your stay. We ate endless Starfruit. Also….we got married at Hale Kukui during our 3 day stay, and it was a picture perfect spot for a small wedding!
This was a cool place to stay. The view you see online is indeed the view you get from your room (!) If you walk out through the orchard to the lookout you can get an even wider view of the cliffs and ocean. We stayed in the studio, it was the perfect size for a couple, plenty of room. It was rather humid (at least when we stayed in February) so be prepared for that. There was something so relaxing about soaking in the tub (even w/out jets as others have mentioned). Nothing but that view and peace and quiet :) Picking fruit from the orchard was a lot of fun and we had fresh juice every morning. And this is a small detail, but the coffee we were provided, whatever it was, was great. Really no negatives to say! This was a fun place to stay and a little different. We drove and explored a lot of the East side of the island as well as the Hilo area and waterfalls from here. We stayed here for three nights as part of a longer trip to the big island, and it worked out great. The nearby town Honoka'a (about a 10 or 15 minute drive I think) is small but laid back and friendly, it ended up being one of our favorite towns on the island. If you are planning a trip to the big island I would definitely recommend spending some time at Hale Kukui. It was a great value too, for the money you spend you really get something special.
We had the pleasure of staying in a cottage at Hale Kukui for five nights and we enjoyed it immensely. Paula and Dan, the caretakers were wonderful. They were available, yet live in their own home on the premises so we enjoyed our privacy. The cottage is perfect. The view is magnificent. All amenities were provided including extra linens and towels, beach umbrella and chairs, a full kitchen, and an outside tub on the balcony/porch. I particularly enjoyed soaking in the tub in the evening while listening to the night sounds. Fresh fruit is available for picking right from their orchard. Dan provided us with a detailed map to help us find the very best beaches, lookouts, restaurants and shops in the area. The town is not far and we were able to shop for groceries for breakfast and snacks/wine. I cannot tell you how enjoyable our stay was. Do not miss the opportunity to stay at this lovely cottage.
This place is everything it claims to be and more. The views are breathtaking and the owner is fun. It's off the beaten path but its also walking distance to the beautiful waipio valley! Escape the chaps and head out to hale kukui for some relaxation and fresh fruit!
Even with the frogs and birds I slept really well here. Bed was comfortable. Cottage was clean. It is a cottage though - nothing fancy. I would get bored here if I stayed too long, but after spending over a week in South Kohola it was a nice change. A new restaurant opened up within walking distance. The food was okay. Service was chaotic, but they had just opened, so they were still learning. They couldn't figure out how to charge my meal on a credit card. Bring cash. Many stores and restaurants in the nearby town only take cash. Paula was friendly and helpful. If I ever return to the Big Island, I think I will stay here again.
We stayed in the studio cottage for a week. It was even better than the pictures - the views from the lanai were incredible. The cottage had everything we needed for a very peaceful stay on an amazing part of the island. The Waipio Valley overlook is only a short walk away. Paula and her two furry assistants were gracious hosts! It was hard to leave.....
