About this property
Forest Retreat Eco-Lodge - 24 acres of private land.
Picture Shangri La with rolling mists and sunshine over the canopy of Ohia Lehua with the tip of Mauna Kea poking through the valleys off in the near distance...
Ahu Lani Retreat Center is an educational and retreat facility located at 3,000 feet elevation on the Hamakua Coast. We host Universities, Yoga Teacher Trainings, Father Daughter Retreats, and a variety of unique groups looking to escape the sounds and vibrations of the modern world and retreat to the mystical forests of fairies and dragons.
We are the last property on the road only 3.5 miles from the belt road. We are on the slopes of Mauna Kea (10 miles mauka) and situated in an old growth Ohia and newly planted Koa forest. The journey to our sanctuary is a pilgrimage to an ancient part of the Hawaiian landscape that many people haven't had a chance to experience until now.
We have not been active on VRBO and so our listing has recently been updated.
16 people are included in this booking rate, but we host up to 20 people. We specialize in connecting visitors and guests to the Hawaiian community of healers. We can arrange yoga, ayurvedic, lomi lomi, gong, etc.
Our ranch is a miniature petting zoo and we have baby goats and gigantic horses for you to meet. Farm fresh eggs are included for our guests as long as they last.
The Ahu Lani Sanctuary which surrounds the retreat center is a 24 acre native forest. We have over 130 different species of native trees, ferns, flowers, and herbs. We have hiking trails on the land, or explore barefoot in the forest on your own trails. The land is fully fenced so no worry about wild boars or random bulls.
A wrap-around Lani makes for great gathering spaces to enjoy meals, relax and read, nap, and hang out with the friends/family. A large commercial style chef's kitchen with chopping block island is perfect for creating home cooked meals, or let us cater for you.
This property has a very unique 30 foot cedar round room. Enjoy morning yoga, meditation, dancing, and group gatherings in this warm and special room.
We are 100% off grid -solar and water catchment.
Close to Waimea (25 minutes to town) and Waipio Valley (20 minutes) yet far enough from the highway to feel like you are in your own Hawaiian sanctuary. Mauna Kea is visible on a clear day. 50 minutes to Hilo, 1.5 hour to Kona, and 45 minutes to the most amazing beaches on Hawaii. Plenty of parking for multiple vehicles, we do recommend 4X4 because it is a dirt road to access the ranch.
Let us share with you a part of Hawaii you have never seen before!

A stunning and beautiful situation and location. The hosts Garrett and Kaia were so pleasant to deal with and very helpful. They made suggestions as to sights to see and good places to eat, going so far as to even picking up a meal for us. There was plenty of room at this location for all of our family and each member had their own room. Out grand children greatly enjoyed the animal life both domestic and wild.
Mahalo Kaia and Garrett.
My family stayed here for a week for celebrations and a family reunion. The property is stunning and the hosts are kind, welcoming and well-informed on the area and property. The beds were very comfortable and the kitchen extremely well-equipped (a vitamix!) The hosts are good communicators and I would highly recommend this place for a big group looking for lots of space in a remote area of Hawaii island. One thing potential guests will want to know-- although we found this place very comfortable, it might not be comfortable for everyone. The ride to the property from the highway is 20 minutes uphill on a bumpy road. There are no shortcuts and if you have a bad back, it might not work for you. Also, there is no heat in the bedrooms. It can get chilly at night, so make sure everyone in your party is well-aware to bring extra layers. I would absolutely recommend Ahu Lani to a group of crunchy travelers who enjoy hiking and cooking together. It's a very very special place.
The pictures on VRBO do NOT do this property justice. It is amazingly beautiful and peaceful. The family room and kitchen were so spacious that everyone hung out for hours every evening for meals and to play games. We spent a lot of time together on the massive wrap-around porches. The kids loved petting the goats and horses and checking for eggs in the chicken coop. And the whole family laid in the courtyard at night watching the stars. We went to Kona and Hilo to do a few touristy things. But I would have been happy just staying at the house. The yoga studio is awesome.
Tanner, the caretaker, lives nearby and took us on a tour of the land. He’s a conservationist and is working to reintroduce trees and protect the Hawaiian ecosystem. He’s very knowledgeable- we learned quite a bit from him. Also, we were celebrating the life of my younger brother who passed recently and he brought 3 trees for us to plant in his memory. It was very thoughtful and meant a lot to all of us.
I would recommend buying groceries before you head there (there’s a great Costco in Kona). But other than food, everything you need is there (including a kitchen with all the utensils you need and even beach chairs and boogie boards for the beach). I would also recommend doing the initial drive up the mountain during the day. The road is safe but quite an adventure the first night. LOL.
This is the perfect spot for a restful retreat and was my favorite vacation ever. I couldn’t recommend it more. Thank you!!
