The resort has a beautiful stretch of beach with comfortable lounge chairs, friendly staff, & clean rooms. The grounds are adorned with gorgeous flowering trees and shrubs, a Buddha statue atop a steep flight of wide stairs, and plenty of spots to view the sunset. We had a room with an ocean/sunset view which was well worth the extra cost. The market offered amazing Kona coffee drinks and less expensive snack options. The restaurants were unbelievably overpriced! There were no affordable options, and dinner reservations are required. The boutique shops were nice, particularly Noa Noa. The parking valets were great. Overall, a lovely resort but not spectacular.
Fabulous hotel. The property is beautiful and immaculate. Gorgeous landscaping and nice staff. Beautiful views from everywhere you look and very clean. Ocean front room was extremely private and comfortable. Food was good but not mind blowing. The resort had an east coast country club kind of vibe, which isn’t really my thing but it’s so lovely I didn’t care. Beach was fantastic!
Great service and overall experience. Food was a little pricey.
Awesome hotel! The location and beach can't be beat. Very relaxed atmosphere here. The staff top to bottom were first rate. Can't wait to go back.
Awesome! My girl friend and I love this place sooooooo much!
You'll understand what I mean as soon as you drive onto the property. It's exactly what you think of when you picture tropical paradise. The beach is immaculate. Perfect surf that you can bob around in all day. Snorkeling, paddle boarding, watching mantas and turtles, all right there in a secluded beach. It is better than the pictures show. The hotel is amazing. The grounds are landscaped and manicured to perfection. We stayed in the Beachfront wing which is a 2 minute walk from our door to our beach chairs. I've never been greeted with such a warm welcome! The staff at the activity huts in the beach were friendly and helpful. Everyone that worked there had a smile on their face and it's obvious why. Loved the food in all the restaurants. We had the most amazing anniversary dinner at Manta. Copper Bar was probably our favorite spot for everyday meals. It is VERY expensive but it's the price you pay for a hotel of this caliber. Food and Drink tip: bring a cooler and a koozie. Stop at Costco, grab your drinks of choice, and every morning you can call for ice and they'll bring you a big bag. Viola, ice cold beverages all day. But try a Fredrico cocktail at least once. It's the hotels signature drink. Martinis we're great. Good beer selection. We also brought light food and snacks. Beach food from Hau Tree was reasonable and delicious with generous portions. I can't say enough about the Mauna Kea. It's heaven on earth. Once you go you'll never want to go elsewhere.
Great room , restaurant and entertainment in lobby. Great waking beach, swimming and surfing
A wonderful building that is all open to the sea and nature surrounding it.
Lovely, if not over priced. Room has a lot of noise from lawn mowers if on mountain side. great roomy bathroom. expensive breakfast. decent sized room.
The Mauna Kea is fantastic. It's quiet and elegant. There is no nightlife there, no late night bar, frequently no one in the hallways after 930 or so. These are all major pluses. The beach is one of the best in the world. Ample loungers with pads, towels, umbrellas etc. The pool is small but really nice. We opted for the daily breakfast buffet....strongly recommend this. Excellent selection, service and location to die for, overlooking the beach. All staff are obviously well trained and very professional and friendly. Kona offers great natural beauty and variety..the Kohala coast is sunny, dry and perfect for beach activities. There is a huge reef which comes in all the way to the beach at the hotel. Anyway, it all comes at a price, but they deliver. We'll go back for sure..this was our second time at this hotel
We spent a week at the Mauna Kea this January, 2014. This was our third trip over about a decade to the Mauna Kea. I believe that whoever is managing the property today is doing a wonderful, wonderful job. While the hotel has always been a five star location, the recent updates to the rooms and the level of current service are simply as good as it gets.
Bodysurfing and snorkeling with all the sunshine you could ever want. Resort is quiet and beautiful.
Mauna Kea Hotel is 33 miles north of Kailua Kona and sits on a knoll, in its own little oasis, above a fantastic 2nd-to-none beach cove. Water is clear, sand is white and the snorkeling was great. Ate at all three of the restaurants on premises including the Sunday buffet and the food at all three was excellent. Although we didn't golf the course is in excellent shape w/great vistas of the private cove and ocean. The Mauna Kea is showing its age (please! get rid of the rope decor on the lower level walls) and we didn't appreciate our "turn down service" knock on the door at 8:20 in the evening. We stayed in the Deluxe Ocean Front room but for the price I'd rather be at the Sheraton Maui.
We have stayed at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel dozens of times since 1987. Since school is back in session the Hotel definitely qualified as an Quiet Adult Getaway. Saturday Clam Bake. Not to be missed. All you can eat Maine Lobster!!!
We came here for our honeymoon and couldn't be happier with the hotel. The renovation respected the original elegance of the 1960's-era building, historic in its own right, but brought it up to world-class standards. I recommend staying in one of the rooms on upper floor of the old tower....the rooms are larger and the bathrooms are huge and spa-like. The bathroom even had its own balcony! The views from the mountain/golf course side are gorgeous and unless you have to have water views you can save a little by choosing one of these rooms. With the $200 credit the hotel offered, most breakfast and parking charges were covered. The breakfast buffet is fantastic, but a bit expensive. Eat breakfast at the hotel, then drive 10-20 minutes away to some of the small towns for lunch and dinner. The beach is stunning, quiet, and kept spotless clean by the staff, all of whom were nothing but cordial and professional. We will definitely come back here again.
The architecture of this classic resort is unique and contains a marvelous collection of oriental art incorporated in the design. It sits above a beautiful semi-private beach with a stunning view out over the ocean. It is away from the main tourist areas and the quiet is lovely. The staff could not be nicer or more helpful and obviously work in a place they are very proud of. The food is also of the highest caliber.
We were greeted with a lea and were led to a beautiful ocean view room in the beach club area. It is a beautiful resort with many antiques from the Rockefeller collection. The amenities were lovely - 2- robes, terry and Japanese style. 2- sinks plenty of storage and hangers. The only criticism is that the food is very expensive ($80 for 2- breakfast buffets including tax and tip) and average.
This place is a hidden gem. There's a private beach and really amazing snorkeling. We've seen turtles both trips to the Mauna Kea. On this trip, we saw huge schools of fish and turtles 5 feet from the shore. We've also been able to see Manta rays in the evenings. The staff work really hard to keep the rooms clean. They clean your room and replenish your towels twice a day and have turn down service as standard service. It's the perfect place to mellow out, enjoy white sandy beaches, snorkel and relax. Water is not too rough so it's great for people who aren't great swimmers. This is our favorite place to stay on the Big Island. We will continue to stay at the Mauna Kea.
