This hotel is on the grand river yes, the view is very industrial so don't think romance unless old factory is your thing. The finish of the remodel is attractive in a modern yet slightly tacky way (Purple accents). The contractor needs to be made to finish as almost everything is 90 percent finished. Beds are very firm and plastic bed bug guards are installed over them just like in all the finest hotels* (*see sarcasm) . The managers are friendly. Formica on the table in the room was coming unglued, light switch was very visibly crooked (maybe 12°off and polyurethaned in place), the bathroom door opens against the curved shower curtain pushing the door back against the person on the toilet leaving little room for sitting. The shower head is maybe 5ft8 off the tub floor. The room was clean and modern but stay in a cheaper place with good reviews by the airport as that area is better for food, shopping etc. Downtown is easy to get to either way. Skip the river rock except for maybe soup. Don't pay over $100 for this hotel any time of year any reason.
In town for a wedding at Cheney's Place.. This hotel has been around longer than me and I'm 50, but they have done a good job renovating. King room was comfortable and quiet. My wife and I slept very sound here, beds were fine. Parking was ample, shuttle was convenient and prompt. Location was great and easy to get around from. Area is fine and I'm sure the outdoor area would be nice in warmer months. Staff was nothing but friendly and professional. Did have to get key card rebooted once but big deal.
Checked into our room and were put next to a young family that not only did not attempt to keep their young children quiet but actually riled them up to make noise. I asked to be switched to another room and was accommodated. The room was a bit dated but was nice and the area around the hotel was clean.
First time at this hotel-plenty of free parking, check in was fast and easy- Haley checked us in, she was so nice to us and very helpful. Our room was clean and nice decor. The bed was very comfortable with great pillows. We stayed on the 3rd floor-very quite. The free shuttle is a great service-our shuttle driver took us to the Van Andel Arena for a concert and when it was over we called him to pick us up. I regret not getting his name, October 28th in the evening-very nice man. We had breakfast in the hotels restaurant-$9.99 a person for a buffet. Pleanty of food-hot and cold, taste great and great service. My husband and I will return!
It hadn't been my first or even second choice and wasn't expecting much when we pulled up to the hotel. The neighborhood is rather industrial but very close to freeways, major roads and shopping. What e n we got inside the hotel lobby, we could see it had been updated and I was happy to see how m know deen, bright and fresh everything looked. The girl at the front desk (Denise) was nice and helpful a nd let us check in even though we were a bit early. The room was clean and bright and looked newly renovated. The only things I didn't like we're pretty minor...they need hooks or towel bars in the bathroom and the sink drains super slow. Other than that...the room was fine. We had breakfast in the hotel restaurant. We had the hot buffet a nd it was hot and fresh and had both healthy and not healthy eating options. We didn't use the indoor pool or hot tub but we were happy they were options. There is also a lovely outdoor courtyard...perfect for reading or relaxing. Parking was free and there were plenty of spaces available as well as a free shuttle. Bottom line...this is not a luxury hotel but we would stay there again and bet there will be even more updates and pleasant surprises.
Although the hotel looks nice.. being kept awake by a horrible band, being lied to and leaving with a purse full of ants ruined this trip. It was almost 11pm when we finally switched rooms. Avoid at all costs.
Not the worst hotel I've stayed at, but definitely not the best. You can tell they've tried to update the hotel, but it's not the nicest. The mattress was somewhat uncomfortable, the lamp in our room flashed on and off at random times, the bathroom door wouldn't close unless slammed, and the safety lock on the hallway door was half broken. Overall it was clean and the staff was ok, but I don't think I'd stay there again. Not worth the money we spent for 2 nights, but we were limited with options since it was during ArtPrize.
Hotel is convenient to downtown and really is right on the river. We had a very good meal in the lounge/restaurant. First room adjoined another and the noise from the room next door was as if people were in the room with us. Moved to another room that was more quiet, until the live band started up on the patio & played until after 11 (not something we needed after a long, hot day). Room appeared clean and newly remodeled, but seemed a little like the renovation was done on the cheap: light on desk was turned off but periodically flashed bright light until unplugged; low-flow toilet did not dispose of even small amount of paper (then gave up completely!) You can slap paint on something, but bad is bad.
At first glance this hotel looks AMAZING! Swanky with the new furniture and colors. But it stops there. Sinks don't drain. Only decaf coffee in room. No soap. I repeat, no bar soap! Had to go to desk 3 separate times to have cards re-keyed because they didn't work. Asked for soap and was told sorry they don't have any. Only time we used elevator what to take luggage up and then down because it was so so slow. Lukewarm coffee in the lobby; but thumbs up for the flavored creamers! Only gave 2 towels when we paid for three people in the room. Waiter at the restaurant was awful. The beds have PLASTIC wrapped over the mattresses so every time you moved it made noise. Air conditioner compressor was terribly loud and woke us up all night. People in the room next to us let their young kids scream and run up and down the hallway. Drunks banging on door all hours of the night. That happened 3 separate times. Do not stay here. Suck it up and spend the money for a better experience. We left tired and angry
We LOVED our stay. After an exceptionally hot drive to Grand Rapids we walked in to a beautifully renovated hotel with ice water at the coffee bar on the way to the elevator, super cushy carpeting to our room and the air was set to 70 degrees - great first impression! Ahhhhhhhhhh. We went into town for a little bit, came back and enjoyed the hot tub and the swimming pool and were able to hear the band playing on the patio, it was wonderful! The patio area is right on the Grand River and it's beautiful ; they have all kinds of little playful games such as Jenga and an oversized chess game. The band that played on Friday night was so much fun and overall it was one of the best times we've had in a long time; we will absolutely be back and would recommend to anyone. Also you can't beat the price, if you look at the room rates for a place in downtown Grand Rapids versus the Grand River hotel which is a little bit off the beaten track, across the river you will be pleasantly surprised. Our lunch today, before we headed out, was in the hotel restaurant and it was superb, beautiful setting . Kathleen our waitress was phenomenal and very helpful (she gave us some insider tips on how to navigate Art Prize). We have loved our visit to Grand Rapids and to this hotel. Well done!!
