This hotel may have seen better days. It is in an area that has apparently not recovered from hurricanes recent and in the past. There is not much within walking distance and the restaurant on site is average to below average. There is a pool bar, but it does not look like it has been open in some time. One nice feature is a shuttle to the beach. The gym was well appointed for a hotel gym.
This hotel had pleasant staff but the appeal ended there. The place had the pool, gym, business centre, restaurant, but it was a place we didn't want to spend any time. It's was weirdly quiet with only 4 or so sun beds around the pool and no guests. The rooms were very tired and in a poor location in the centre of town with no beach or keys. We spent all day out and only came back to sleep, or try to sleep. Our AC unit kept us awake like a diesel generator might in the corner of the room. It would shut down and then restart time and time again. I didn't want to dislike the place as it felt like the sort of struggling hotel you might come across in the third world, starved of resources but carrying on regardless.
If you remember the oldies tv series The Time Tunnel - you will know what was the feeling of being cast back to the eighties...the room, furniture, tv, decorations and even the breakfast are deep back in time. Resort it is not, the hotel is good enough for spending the night if you are in the area for business meeting or working in one of the ships at the dry dock- but not more than that. Staff is very polite.
If you are in Freeport Bahamas for pleasure/vacation dont stay here. The hotel is old, and far from everything on the island. and very poor internet connection. The restaurant does serve food, but that is all, well you can also get a beer to drown your poor choice of hotel selection. But one positive thing, the staff is excellent, happy and polite. I stayed here for business, and did not choose the hotel myself!
I have stayed here at this hotel a few times. It's about ten minutes to the airport, and ten minutes to downtown. The rooms and hotel are ok, but dated. Things are wearing out and looking it. If this is a vacation for you, pay the extra 20-30 dollars a night and stay at one of the hotels in downtown Lucaya. There is not much near you here that is open periodically. You will pay a lot in taxis to do anything. There is a restaurant onsite. Food is not too bad, although what is described to you when you order is sometimes different to what you get. However service is a little slow. There is no bottled water in the rooms. There is in the restaurant. However after hours the front desk cannot get you any. There is a Pepsi machine on the second level. However still no water. Ten minutes walk there is a gas station you can get some.
I have being coming to this hotel for the past 3 years due to its locality to my client. On this trip things have gotten worse service wise. I have been experiencing difficultly with the internet. I was unable to access my emails for two days from Yahoo and Lycos. This was corrected. However I have not been able to upload my work files to my Organization server due to some new firewall the hotel implemented. I complained about the issue from day 2 of my stay and were given promises of it being corrected. No luck!!!. This is my last stay at this hotel. The bathrooms are in need of new faucets and the wall tiles are caking in some instance.
I usually stay at Castaways. It's functional and reasonable, that's really all that can be said. Breakfast is pretty good in the restaurant and the waitress, who seems to be quite new, was excellent, very helpful and attentive. It is not a luxury place, but you get what you pay for
Here is your 1st hint on what kind of "resort" this is. Our Sunwing flight was cancelled putting out 200+ people and low and behold this place had enough rooms available to accommodate all of us. So that should tell you something right there. The place was empty and empty for a reason. This place has bugs everywhere. The 1st room we were put in had bedbug eggs or poop in the pictures and behind the pictures. My husband lifted the mattress and silverfish scattered everywhere. He pulled the blankets and sheets and found some kind of ants in the bed. The other couple traveling with us found the same thing in their room in addition to spiders when they lifted the blankets and sheets. Many of the other guests found bed bugs and other creepy crawlers. Many people left to go back to the resort they originally came from only to be booted out and then paid out of pocket for other resorts and were told by Nexus/Sunwing that they would not be reimbursed. Now since other people left the other couple we were traveling with and myself requested new rooms because we honestly didn't know where we would sleep if we had to keep those rooms we were originally given. The housekeeper said "I don't know why they gave you the rooms you are in because on my list those rooms are out of order." We did get new rooms that were a bit cleaner and newer plastic to keep the bed bugs off the mattresses. Bathroom was very clean and the bathtub is where our belongings were kept. If I would have thought about it I would have rented a car and slept in it I feel I would have been more comfortable then staying here. This place is a far cry from a resort. It's a 1/2 star shabby hotel with a pool, old worn out mattresses, outdated everything and bugs that's it! No beach, no activities like their ad claims. The only positive about this place are the ladies that worked in the restaurant. They were absolutely fantastic and deserve 5 stars. The food and service from them was far better than it was at the Memories resort but you don't need to stay at this place to eat there.
We were relocated to this hotel after our flight was cancelled. It was a large group of us and at least 5 people came back into the lobby after getting their room keys and either had photos/video of bugs lining the mattresses/boxed springs, or actual bugs they found in their rooms. Cockroaches and bed bugs infest this hotel. The maid told me "not all of the rooms have bugs." We were forced to stay here because there were no openings on the entire island. Miserable. Management tried to help but he knew that his hotel had bugs.
Dated rooms with nylon everywhere. Too much chintz for me. Food was diabolical. HOW do you achieve a well done steak at one end and blue at the other. Didn't bother with breakfast and found a really good chicken shack on E Sunrise Hwy next to the gas station. Not a pleasant experience. Right on highway with very poor soundproofing.
