The Scotsman Hotel

Only negative is that orbitz advertises a gym and spa. But the hotel has none.

We spent six nights at The Scotsman and had a wonderful stay.

The hotel is so beautiful, the staff and the facilities are fantastic, location is perfect. Everything you could think of is near by. Special THANKS to the staff from the restaurant were superb, specially BRANDON he went above & beyond with the room service and with the breakfast buffet. Definitely we will come back, hopefully soon! Falling in love with Edinburgh!!!

This hotel is self-proclaimed 5 stars, but meets three star hotel standards at best. Worn and dated carpet, linens, furniture and decor. All this hotel has going for it is location.

We enjoyed it it was convenient and comfortable. Easy walk to Edinburgh castle and Holyrood House

The location is just about perfect, as long as drunks aren't fighting under your window at night. Appliances, TV system, IT systems were awful. Wi-Fi was down almost the entire week I was there. Poor water pressure in the showers. Fire alarms go off unannounced and sometimes in the middle of the night...poor electrical and computer systems. Central heating with no room controls, and no cooling (A/C). Many towels were worn out. Very, very small hanging closets and almost no drawer storage. Electrical outlets were few and usually hidden by beds or furniture. Car parking is a horror show. Parking is a half mile away and the car park pay system was often not functioning. If you're leaving for the airport with your car, get to the car park early. The restaurant food was average, but the service was good unless it became busy. The wine pours were excellent. They need to continue that!! One positive was the concierge staff, especially Barry. They are excellent, but overworked. The Scotsman needs a complete modernization if it wants to become better than the average European hotel, as was advertised. It currently gets a 2 out of 5 from this guest.

This hotel was very beautiful and in a great location. Just around the corner from the Royal Mile, and within walking distance to sites, shopping, pubs, etc. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because the wifi was terrible. Couldn't get online very easily at all. They did say that they were switching things at the time, and that was why it was slow, but not sure.

The hotel is a good value. The internet was very difficult to access. I asked for a wake up call and they did not call.

I was so excited to have a 5 star hotel experience. Oh well, best laid plans. The exterior and lobby of the Hotel are lovely, eccentric moments of a bygone era. My first clue that the interior wasn't going to live up to its rating was the elevator. Tiny, didn't stop on all floors and the numbering was different inside and on each floor...ummmm...ok. The friendly concierge/bellhop showed me to my room and explained some oddities of the room. The room itself was somewhat cramped, oddly divided and unbearably hot. The first thing I did was to open the windows. Which unfortunately gave me the opportunity to see my view. I looked out at an inner courtyard. Air conditioning units(not that my room offered any) trash and cigarette butts on the shelf outside my window. Oh joy. The marble bathroom was gorgeous and the rainfall shower head delightful. There was a heated towel rack, that didn't work. And no outlets to plug in hairdryers, or other beauty accessories. The bed. Oh dear the bed. The linens were a poor quality and a bit rough. The mattress was horrid. Lumpy and sloped down. I was provided with 3, count them 3, hangers. A pitcher of water was left out for me ONCE in my 9 day stay. As I had emptied it I would have thought they would leave more. I ordered room service a couple times. It was prompt and average. The staff was helpful and very friendly. I ate at the restaurant the last night there. It was mediocre to bad. Not at all worthy of the cost. My server, however, was friendly and lovely. I was disappointed that when my dinner was taken away (some of which was nearly untouched and I stated it just wasn't good) I was not offered a free drink, or dessert, or discount. The overall experience was ok, because of the great location and the friendly staff. It is not, however, even remotely a 5 star hotel. I would neither stay here again, nor recommend it to another unless the price and rating go down.

Edinburgh in February is great, we had blue skies and temps in the 40's which was balmy for us, we left 6ft of snow in MA. The Scotsman was a wonderful place to stay, centrally located and the staff is very accommodating. We had one dinner in their restaurant which was good but pricey, very limited menu. There are loads of pubs in the area which serve great food at very reasonable prices. The people are very friendly and the food was great never mind the varieties of scotch, my husband thought he died and went to heaven!

The service was wonderful and everyone was personable& pleasant in attending to any requests.

Wonderful hotel!!!! First Class!!!!! Staff was so helpful!! I will be back to the Scotsman!! 111

The hotel is in a perfect location to explore. The train station is across the road for a quick trip to Dunbar and dine at the Rock restaurant. If you arrive by train with luggage, there is a lower (gym?) entrance if you buzz the reception desk at the door. Elevators to reception inside. The restaurant is very nice.

My wife and I couldn't believe how great the location for the Scotsman was! It really made our trip because we are big walkers. The staff, including the front desk, bell and concierge staff, were always accommodating. Our room was very nice as well. No regrets or complaints at all. Highly recommend.

Wonderful and courteous staff! Hotel was in great spot for walking to local attractions. Only drawback is lack of close parking.

Hotel is great. Best location by the Royal mile, close to everything. Staff was incredibly accommodating. Internet Wifi is free but slow, had some trouble with the tv, but all in all it was truly a 5-star experience. Speakers in the bathroom to patch in the tv or radio gave me a chuckle.

Our experience was phenomenal!!! One of the concierges, Frasier, showed us to our amazing room upon our arrival and set us up with a dinner reservation as well. He and Douglas and Barry always made sure our needs were taken care of, our bags were attended to and gave us great tips on places to go and see. Jennifer and Mary in reception were very helpful with the city's attractions also. The location was superb. We were able to walk to Edinburgh Castle, Holyrood Palace, Calton Hill and the Scott Monument with ease and in a minimum of time. Any time, my new wife and I are able to make it back to Scotland from the U.S., we will be staying at the legendary (at least to us) Scotsman Hotel!

Have been to many 5 star hotels and was looking forward to staying at the Scotsman. Unfortunately, I was disappointed with the whole experience! I guess my expectations were too high. The one plus was Barry, our concierge, who was informative and extremely helpful during our stay.

Lovely hotel with very friendly, helpful staff. PERFECT location for visiting Edinburgh, especially the Fringe Festival. Good restaurant in the hotel, too.

The service, cleanliness and staff were very good. The staff just couldn't be better. The restaurant was great - we ate breakfast there every morning, and had lunch and dinner once. The hotel has the best location and the "Royal Mile" is a few steps from the front door. It is across the street from the main train station, and a variety of buses stop at the front door. That said, it is a hotel in a city. Parking is off site (but not as expensive as other cities). When we checked in, we were taken to a room with the view of the wall of an adjacent building. What was unclear in the description and the pictures is that a very small portion of the rooms have a poor view, others have the view of a courtyard and the majority (I believe) have a nice view of the city. After a discussion with the front desk staff, we were moved to a room with a much nicer view. The hotel has an indoor pool and exercise room which we did not explore.
