The grounds of this fabulous mansion alone are worth the price of admission. Stroll among the lovely gardens, have a glass of wine on a cushioned couch beneath a gazebo, or settle with a book on one of the front porch rocking chairs. A delicious breakfast buffet is included, which you can enjoy at a white table cloth setting with your fellow guests. The neighborhood is the most walkable one in Charlotte. The rooms are tasteful and elegant.
A group of ten can challenge any small, luxury lodging, but Becky and her team proved why The Mansion offers the “whole” package. Arrival to departure (and, all between), the rooms, porches, gardens, conference rooms, breakfast, social, hospitality were excellent. I must go back just to have the goat cheese that was offered at afternoon social. This Select Registry property shines brightly in a quiet neighborhood.
This is a very unique bed and breakfast. Our room was very large. The bed was excellent. The bed was excellent. The breakfast was excellent. The parking is free. There are many good restaurants in the are. The staff is excellent. I would stay here again.
This is a terrific hotel in the heart of a nice neighborhood. The gardens and grounds are pretty to stroll in, the front porch is anchored with enormous and lush flower boxes, massive great hall with black and white checkerboard tile is just what you'd expect from a grand old home. Our room was comfortable with a large bathroom and pretty windows overlooking the rear garden and seating area. We loved the beautifully set breakfast table and the sweet lady presiding over the delicious and attractive buffet, pouring coffee, and making certain we were taken care of. In the afternoon there was a busy bar set on the covered front porch - cash bar. Guests were mingling there and or resting a spell in the rockers. The staff was very pleasant. We would definitely stay again.
This was our second time to stay here - lovely 20 room inn....our room was very spacious! Love the shared “sleeping porch” - never saw our neighbors so had the porch to ourselves - swing/chairs/outdoor tables and a wonderful view of the grounds. Very large bathroom with 2 sinks (always a plus).....only negative was light in shower also turned on a fan that had loud humming noise......I entered that info into a survey sent by the Duke Mansion, so I am sure they will address. The breakfast is in a beautiful room - good food! Biscuits/gravy, yogurt, assorted breads, eggs, bacon, sausage, quiche, fresh fruit - all delicious! The grounds are really lovely - worth walking around to see them......stay here - you won’t be disappointed - hope we can come back and see another room - they are all different.
We always prefer to stay here during visits to Charlotte. This is our 5th stay over the past 3+ years visiting Charlotte. This is a B&B so if you are looking for a hotel with a swimming pool and spa, this may not be your place. Enjoy the grounds during your stay. Free parking on site. This property hosts many weddings and receptions. Each room is well furnished and slightly different from others. Please be aware that there are a limited number of rooms since this is a B&B. Our room rate included free buffet breakfasys...one of the best we have enjoyed. The staff has always been great.
My wife and I had an appointment for our Global Entry at the Charlotte Douglas Airport at 9:15 in the morning, so in order to ensure we would not be late we decided to spend the day and night before in Charlotte and chose the Duke Mansion B&B. Overall it was a wonderful choice. The entire staff was friendly, courteous and professional. Our room was large and well appointed. It was a very hot day in Charlotte and the room AC worked perfectly keeping the room very comfortable (sometimes in these older properties that is not always the case). The linens were all top quality and bath robes are supplied which is a very nice touch. The grounds of the property are very pretty with lots of colorful flowers and shrubs. The breakfast buffet was also very good with plenty to choose from and lots of fresh fruit. So why only 4 instead of 5 rating, although the property is well maintained, due to it's age I realize it requires constant attention. Our screened porch had a few holes in the screen allowing a wasp and some bugs to enter and again although our room was well maintained and generally very clean the lower part of shower glass door and lower crevices of the tile had some minor black mold. We felt a little more attention to cleaning these small details should be made, perhaps some bleach from time to time. Aside form these minor issues it was a wonderful stay and we will be back. Oh one more comment. I know the Property is listed as a B&B but we felt it is more like an Inn, which serves a wonderful breakfast, than a traditional B&B. For us B&B's allow for interaction with other guests in a smaller dining area (the breakfast is served in a large room with several large tables, more Inn style). Usually at B&B's there is an evening cocktail hour with some beverages and light snacks served where you can choose to mingle with the other guests before heading out to dinner The Duke Mansion did not offer this type of socializing. Mind you this was not an issue for us but if you are looking for a traditional B&B experience, this is not it and you could be disappointed.
this place. It is exactly a bed and breakfast inn. A very big bed and breakfast place. We were there for a recent wedding event. It is well appointed, and the staff is very competent. They have an extensive breakfast, but otherwise do not have a dining area. They do however cater events. We had a rehersal dinner there and the setting and the meal were fantastic. This is one of the homes owned at one time by James Duke a robber baron of prerolled cigararttes. It is set in a quiet neighborhood of large and stately homes. My favorite part of the grounds was the large and beautiful garden that surrounds the house. It seemed to be handicapped friendly, but you do have to enter through the kitchen.
Lovely gardens, however, they seem more interested in outside functions than guests. Upon checking in, specified 3:00 pm, we had to wait for the front desk to be assembled and computer setup, due to a wedding the day before along with being told that the floor in our room was still wet! Seriously? Do not book room 202, unless you bring a can of WD40. The armoire was so noisy we didn't want to open it to remove our clothes daily. Would not recommend. Breakfast was plentiful but is advertised as being served, which is not the case. Buffet.
We visited the Duke mansion some years back, in a late fall, just a day or two before a killing frost, so we did not see the mansion's garden to best advantage. This time we did -- camellias, tulips, redbuds, dogwood -- spring at its best. And meticulously maintained. Best of all, we could see the garden (or part of it) from a second-floor screened-in porch.
