The Hotel is more like a very nice hostel, and not a hotel. It is really nicely appointed for a hostel, but we definitely did not expect this level for the price we paid (over 2,200 Euros for 5 nights), which is relatively speaking pretty expensive for what we actually received. The staff was always very friendly, but the beds were not queen beds - they were single beds pushed together, and when you slept on them, they would push apart. My toddlers had a hard time sleeping on them without falling in the cracks, and it was impossible for us parents to sleep next to each other because of it. Otherwise, the location really can't be beat. I think that if this hotel was priced at 200 euros per night or less it would have been worth it, but it isn't, so for us - it wasn't worth the price.

Smelly bathroom, uneven floors

Our room had a lot of issues - The bathroom and shower had a bad smell throughout our two days stay. The floor was uneven in multiple places, causing us to trip a couple of times. Dangerous with kids! They did not tell us about the extra 67 euro "city fee" until we arrived. But the rest of the service was great. They provided complimentary coffee and helpful info about sightseeing when we asked. The location seemed safe and friendly. It was good if you want to stay near the museums, but far away from the train station.

Nice & clean hotel, easy to take tram 10m to center of Amsterdam. Attentive & very helpful staffs. The only downside is the basement room was not soundproofed, we could hear people was walking, using the bathroom very loud from upstairs hence 4 stars. Other rooms should be better. Recommended!

Cute and Cosy!

Cute and cosy, although we did opt for the small double so no complains about the size. Everything was laid out really well and making good use of the space. The exterior is also very pleasing to the eye as its how people in Amsterdam would live in these narrow houses lined up next to each other with different shaped roofs and vintage design. The staff were friendly. The location is slightly outside of the central area however for ease the tram system and other public transport is very easy to use, quick and efficient. There are many restaurants and shops in the area and some of the main attractions are a short walk from the hotel. We had breakfast, this was a good selection, for the small space they have they presented it really well. The free tea and coffee at any time of day is a bonus!

We were glad to find a hotel with an option for our 4 member family so the teens had a space to sleep on real beds. The check in/breakfast area of the hotel is pretty, our basement room was comfortable with a nice hot shower. It wasn’t ideal to have people using the garden just outside our room as a smoking area, as our room smelled of smoke and pot during the morning and there were people mere feet from our window. Other than that it was perfectly fine & in a good spot for sightseeing.

The hotel is in a great location. A quiet leafy street in easy walking distance of Vondel Park and Leidersplein. We have had some great stays in the past, but the hotel is now in need of some maintenance. Good points are the location, the staff and the garden at the back of the property. The reception area is good and well maintained and the free tea and coffee in reception is very welcome. Less good. The mattress on our bed needed replacing. A topper had been put on but this did not disguise the fact that the mattress was lumpy and bumpy meaning we didn't sleep terribly well. The paint was chipped and scuffed on the walls in the room in various places. The floor tiles in the bathroom looked tired and needed replacing. The mixer tap on the bath leaked and sprayed out of the top and sides when you ran a bath - we didn't try the shower. The bath plug leaked meaning that the bath water drained away if you left it for any length of time before getting in. The carpeting in some of the main areas is stained (stairs and landings) and needs replacing. We have stayed at the Hotel Alexander a few times now but unfortunately this stay was our least favourite as we felt upgrades were urgently needed. We did email the hotel with our comments to give them a chance to respond as an alternative to posting a less than glowing endorsement but unfortunately they did not respond. Hopefully they will take this feedback as a reminder to make some updates.

It was a small room and one of negatives was slanted roofline above bed, making moving about sometimes difficult. Limited storage. It had an elevator but it did not go all the way up or down, so you have to carry luggage up or down some no matter what. Overall good location. Staff was very nice, breakfast good but roof and stairs were significant negative.

We had a really lovely stay at Hotel Alexander. We debated between being really central or a bit further out, and we're so glad we chose this hotel. Staff were great, hotel was clean and in a lovely area, good nearby transport links but also nice to walk. Would absolutely recommend.

We don't travel abroad often and are more accustomed to hotels in the U.S., but I was pleasantly surprised with the Hotel Alexander. I wish I could compare it to another European hotel at which we've stayed, but, for this stay, I was pleased with the convenient location, the immaculate room and the quiet neighborhood. It's actually a great location, away from the hubbub a bit.

Comfortable Amsterdam Retreat

I spent quite a bit of time searching for an affordable Amsterdam hotel with two separate beds. When I found Hotel Alexander, I was a bit concerned with the size of the rooms, but booked anyway. I don't regret that decision one bit! We did have a small room, but the hotel does an excellent job of packing a lot into a small area. The beds were easily separated, plush, and comfortable, with good bedding and accessible reading lights and power outlets. There was a small refrigerator and desk, with little treats just for us. The shower was really nice. The hotel itself is really comfortable, with a stylish dining area and reception. They offer luggage storage and 24/7 coffee and water. We chose not to have a car for the Amsterdam portion of our trip, but we did notice plentiful parking on the street in front of the hotel. I hear it's expensive, though.
