If you want to experience the northern Midwest, consider taking a trip to Detroit. Nicknamed the Motor City, Detroit is home to the historically significant Model T Automotive Heritage Complex, which houses Henry Ford's first Model T. When you fly from West Palm Beach to Detroit, the journey should take about three hours. Several trains and buses have direct lines to the West Palm Beach International Airport (PBI), including the city's Tri-rail system and the Palm Tran. You can also hire a taxi.
Detroit mainly consists of suburbs, but beyond the 10-mile stretch that surrounds the city on three sides, the art and culture can be impressive. You can tour Edison's childhood home and workshop in Greenfield Village or the internationally renowned Detroit Institute of the Arts located downtown. For something truly unique, check out the Eastern Market, an open-air bazaar for everything exotic and culinary, or visit the Heidelberg Project, a block of city streets that has been converted into a giant art exhibition.
Once you land at the Coleman A. Young International Airport, (DET), you can take a taxi into the city center. Early autumn is a great time to see the amazing foliage change colors. Temperatures in the fall range between 60 to 70 degrees during the day and 45 to 50 degrees at night.
