Tuscon is an interesting city, a desert metropolis with an ancient and diverse history. Once there, you won't want to miss the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, which is a combination of museum, zoo and botanical gardens. To see the real deal desert, head to nearby Saguaro National Park.
In the city center, must-see museums and galleries include the Tuscon Museum of Art, where you can view examples of pre-Columbian art, or the Old Pascua Museum and Yaqui Cultural Center, which tells the story of the Pasqua Yaquis tribe. Movie buffs will want to visit the Old Tuscon Studios, where many Westerns were filmed.
Travelers flying into Tuscon International Airport (TUS) will find themselves just a short distance from the downtown district. From the airport, Sun Tran buses run regular services to Tuscon Mall, via downtown. Many hotels also offer free shuttle services, so check whether yours does.
If you have time to travel further afield, don't miss the Kitt Peak National Observatory; an hour away from Tuscon it offers guided tours for astronomy buffs. Also just one hour away is the historic town of Tombstone, home of the infamous O.K. Corral shootout.
