Mauna Kea Summit/Mauna Loa

The Mauna Kea Summit is home to Mauna Loa, the biggest, and still active, volcano on Earth, which has been around for over 700,000 years. This place is almost an amusement park for people who love nature, geology, and beauty. Either attend an extensive seven-hour tour with a guide, or create your own tour with a hike - at Mauna Kea. Visitors will see active lava, witness inspiring sunsets, and take in nights of endless stargazing.

Manini'owali Beach (Kua Bay)

With brilliant white sand and the purest ocean water, Manini'owali Bay is a magazine- beach. Part of Kekaha Kai State Park, you can swim with turtles, watch dolphins and whales in their natural habitat, go snorkeling and even try boogie boarding. Be careful of lava rock pools when the tide goes out in winter. Naturally, this beach can get busy, so arrive early if possible.

Kona coffee

Kona is home to what was recently voted the country's best coffee, with locally-grown Hawaiian Queen Coffee beating over 600 competitors to be crowned best in the whole state of Hawaii. Most coffee shops are local and carry it. Fair warning: it is hard to enjoy this extraordinary coffee and go back to your normal cup of joe; but worry not, most coffee is available for purchase.

Kona hotels

The hotels in Kona range from five-star luxury resorts to cozy huts on the beach. Prices run from as low as $90 a night all the way up to $900 for en-suite rooms with ocean views and every luxury on-site. The average price is typically about $130 per night, and the vast majority are usually located either on or right beside the beach.

Climate

While it can rain often on the other islands of Hawaii, it is rare that Kona gets showers (January tends to get the most rain). It has a tropical environment and essentially enjoys the same weather all year-round. During the day, the high average is usually mid to high 80s, and at night, the average is high 60s to low 70s. It can get a little windy at night from the ocean breeze, so bring layers if you're hoping for beach fires. June through October tend to be the hottest months, and the rest of the year is only slightly cooler by a few degrees.
