Bay Plaza Hotel

Aside from the scaffolding around the building which has been wrapped for months, our room was clean and comfortable. You can’t beat location but if you want quiet choose another hotel away from oriental bay as sirens were goin off every half hour or so it seemed.

We booked our hotel via an agency, which organized our whole trip of 14 days in New Zealand. This included also our B&B and Hotels. In the first week on the South Island we had good to very good B&B’s. The Bay Plaza was compared to all of them the worse. The beds, furniture and bathrooms looked liked out of the 60’s and I assume they are!!! We checked after one hour out and booked a different hotel!

I have never seen a hotel like this. There are so many spider webs on the ceiling. In the shower there was so much mould. When the person next door flushed the toilet I could hear the noise and it was really loud. Also at 11:40pm we went to the reception and we could smell smoke when it clearly says smoke free area. If we could rate this hotel out of -100, we would give it -100. The picture of this hotel on the internet is so different in reality.

So, the location is excellent there is no doubt about that, it’s also clean, and it’s functional. It’s very very dated, the bathrooms don’t look like they have changed since the 80’s. The rooms need new furniture and fixtures as they are very old and looking worn out, but the beds are comfortable. It’s covered in blue netting and scaffolding (as mentioned by others) so there is no chance of a view of anything let alone the harbour. The parking is expensive so don’t keep/bring your car if you aren’t going to use it. Also they charge a fee for a credit card which is a tad annoying when you are spending as much as you are- very few other places do in 2017! The staff were friendly enough and the breakfast (continental included in rate) was a good start to the day for us. It looks like the place is getting done up - it has huge potential if they modernise the rooms and try and hit the 4 star rating they claim to have. Certainly not a bad place, past it’s best - but location wins the day. Try it with the above caveats and know what you are paying for. If you want luxury or modern touches - go elsewhere.

A basic night's stay in a basic room with no air conditioning. We eventually found a fridge and a kettle and coffee and tea facilities. Clean but rather hot on a very warm evening. Convenient location within walking distance of the marina and museums.

Stayed here for night for business trip because of its great location, its being renovated so cant blame them for that. Question I have is why would anyone work in hospitality if the didnt like people?? Receptionist couldnt say hello, thanks nor could she smile. Thought it was me, but observed the same hours later when a couple were checking in,

We ended up staying at this place based upon the recommendation from the tourist information bureau who booked our room for us. Sadly we had a poor experience in Wellington with our accommodation as the place we had booked online many months ago seemingly didn’t even exist. Because of the confusion we didn’t do our normal due diligence searching and just relied on the recommendation of the tourist bureau. As you see from many other reviews the place is in very sad condition. Yes, the building is completely enshrouded in Blue wrap but, that aside, everything in the rooms are tired at best. I would be embarrassed to put these things in a load to take to the garbage dump. I have seen the managers comments and asking for people to bear with them while they are upgrading. That’s all well and good but if you are looking for that kind of support from your guests perhaps you should radically reduce your pricing while you are in the process of upgrading!!!!!!

Just booked into this hotel , the hotel is covered from top to bottom in scaffolding, no great views from the room. Wi-fi took ages to load. Safety deposit box not working even after engineer had been. Very tired room furniture

Had one night last weekend. Very close to all the main attractions in central City. Across the road from the local Sunday market down on the waterfront. Although a little dated we found the bed to be one of the most comfortable we have ever experienced in a Hotel. Food was really good. Service was good

I stayed here twice - for one night on my way over to Picton and for two nights on my return. Unfortunately my visit coincided with the building being repainted so, my room with a view of the harbour, was marred by the blue plastic mesh in which the building was wrapped. Building have to be maintained I understand that – what was disconcerting was having the painters working on the scaffolding right in front of my window. The hotel is well located being just a few meters from the lovely harbour walkway and about a 10minute walk to the centre of the city. I was a later arrival on my first visit so had room service – the meal was below standard. But on my second visit I ate in the dining room and had a very acceptable meal. I had asked for an early wake-up call – 3.30am – for my last morning there as I was travelling on an early flight back to Australia. Luckily I didn’t rely on it, as it never came!
