Well, it's functional, and it ticks boxes for short stays, but it's not high on my list of places to stay. Staff were average, decor was tired but it had rooms available. I didnt try the restaurant, wasn't inclined to really when there are so many good restaurants in Wellington. Not recommeded unless there are few options left.
BAY PLAZA was a nice place to stay as it was easy to come and go and they had parking available off street. Also great view over city and the harbour, close to public transport but also restaurants. They have a restaurant /bar within and we had a meal one night that wasnt great however I must say that they went to great lengths to correct their error and gave us a complimentary big cooked breakfast the next morning which I must say was awesome. The bar is really nice too. Enjoyed our stay very much, staff very polite and dignified.
When we arrived we were told $18:00 for the car park, everything was extra washing machine $2:00 soap$2:0 tumble dryer $2:0 and breakfast we booked cooked but had to wait for them to check, toast fruit juice etc extra, all other place we stayed was inclusive
I had stayed here 2 years ago and appreciated the location. At that time we had a harbour view but the room was musty and tired. This time we got a standard room which I mistakenly thought was what we had last time but faced mt vic instead. The room was very small. It smelt old. The shower surrounds occupied such a big area in the bathroom that I had a number of bruises from accidentally bumping into it. The staff were ok, but not overly friendly. I won't stay here again. I think the yha across the road offers better value. This place needs a serious makeover. No idea how it held up in the quakes. I can't even say it's good value for money.
Yes, the location is excellent, but the hotel could use some work. The hallways smell a bit damp, but then you don't spend much time in the hallways and the room seemed fine. The floor of the bathroom seemed rather grungy, as though it could really use a good scrub. But against that, the view from my room over the bay was superb. I also looked out directly at the Te Papa museum which was only a 5-minute walk away. I think the only hotel with more convenient access to the Te Papa was the one with the golden hippo on the roof. I ate two meals at the hotel restaurant. The first meal was absolutely excellent, only a chicken curry, but wonderfully cooked. The second meal was beef steak and was somewhat indifferent.
Pro's: Hotel is in a good central city location for access to Te Papa and the central city. We stayed one night which was comfortable. Hotel is dated and could do with a revamp, but was clean and tidy which suited its purpose for one night. Con's: Reservation attendant was not very helpful. We booked a double room which has 2 single beds as I was traveling with my cousin. We arrived at the room to find it had a double bed only, went to reception to raise our concern and tell them of the mistake within 10 mins of checking in, only to be told " you took to long to tell us, you should have told us when you checked in, we now have no rooms left" when you check in you don't know what the room layout is until you walk through the door - so a poor excuse really. we were also told "this is what happens when you book through other websites like Trivago etc" this was incorrect also as we had booked on the hotel website, so the info should have been correct on their system, Was a good stay but was tarnished slightly but lazy staff.
We booked a room at the Bay Plaza Hotel via lastminute.com, exhausted after a long drive and ferry ride from Christchurch. During our stay we encountered bumbling front desk staff, a very basic hotel room without a working bathroom light and a desolate view of the car park. (NB: We were not told during the online booking process we would have to pay an extra $18 to park in the hotel's car park, so watch out for that.) The cherry on top of this depressing scenario however, was the loud comings and goings of drunken guests in the room opposite to ours - they hosted a party which lasted until the wee hours, and started up again around 9am. The hotel was either unwilling, or unable to do anything about it. The next morning the inept clerk at the front desk could barely apologise, much less make amends with something as paltry as reimbursing us for the parking when we asked. All up this nightmareish stay cost us almost $200. I'd rather withdraw that money in $5 bills, burn it, and huddle around the dying embers for warmth than stay in this third-world rat's nest again.
Stayed for night, room was clean and bed very comfortable. Older hotel but close to all the sites including TePapa and waterfront boardwalk. Staff were helpful and off-street, locked at night parking available.
This hotel is extremely convenient to downtown, Oriental Bay and the beach. It may be a bit old, but it's very clean and the beds are very comfortable. What more could you ask for? The staff is very helpful and friendly as well. You can walk anywhere you need to go, Te Papa Museum, bars, restaurants, Cuba Street, Mount Victoria, etc. I will always stay here when I'm in Wellington!
We stayed here for an event nearby and the only thing really going for this hotel is it's location albeit a noisy one with 24 hour road noise and no double glazing . Rooms tidy but are dated and no aircon at all. Tiny shower and bathroom . Overall the hotel is very dated and overpriced for what it is . Convenient location to local waterfront and Te Papa . Would not stay here again as there are better choices nearby
