Affordable, friendly staff, good location, close to public transit, and a great onsite opportunity to attend live jazz concerts.
I would recommend the Rex hotel for anyone that wants a hotel that is centrally located to food, shopping, entertainment, and transportation. Light sleepers should keep in mind that live music is performed on the lower level of this establishment. Although breakfast is included with the stay, there is a wide variety of ethnic restaurants nearby should one desire ethnic, vegan, or vegetarian cuisine. If one is looking to connect with a particular ethnic bloc, then you will feel at home as the hotel is located in one of the most diverse areas of the city. Anyone arriving late by train (i.e. like myself via the Amtrak Chicago-Buffalo-Toronto route) or leaving on an early train the next morning (i.e. like myself via Via Rail Toronto-Montreal route) would be wise to consider this hotel as an option as it is reasonably close via taxi (or a twenty minute walk for the more adventurous) to the Toronto train station.
Very central and convenient location. 1 block to the subway, 10 min walk to central business district. Lots of food options locally, both restaurants and convenience stores. But it's very loud - mostly city noise. Yes, there's the jazz music but that's not that loud and it's pleasant. The city noise (construction vehicles, buses, etc) were a challenge for sleep. Also the mattresses are mediocre.

It's an old, charming building for a great price. The surrounding area is very convenient for food, sights, and transit. It's above a jazz club in downtown, don't expect it to be quiet.

The Rex is fine. A budget hotel that is clean and friendly. Excellent breakfast. High falutins would not appreciate the history …nor the charm.
