Elephant Backpacker Sydney - Hostel2.5 out of 5.0

The place is okay for a low budget, short stay in the city, but it lacks atmosphere, and the kitchen facilities are pretty mediocre. The place was clean enough, and the rooms were cleaned every day, and many of the staff were clearly in training so it always took a while to speak to anyone. A breakfast is served daily which was good. Don't expect anything too fancy, but it does the job for a couple nights stay.
Amazing location for the $$! Really enjoyed my stay, met pleasant people from all over the globe. Great walking distance to just about anything you can think of, plus shopping, grocery, bars, etc.! Only complaint was that the building is old... Still can't believe it is right across from the City, awesome.
I couldn't have imagined this much good accommodation at an amazing price. Good staff, cleanliness, and room up gradation was the best part. And everything is so near to the accommodation like city, harbor bridge. I had a really good stay in Elephant.
the rooms were not clean and the wifi didn't work most of the timey By the time we arrived 9pm they had no bedsheets for us and we had to come back later. breakfast was good and the location was good - about 20 min walk go opera house.
This hostel has some of the worst reviews I've seen but if you get the memo "you get what you pay for" the hostel is not that bad. Yep - its old and not everything works but they do clean showers, toilets and kitchen constantly it's just that its a big hostel with 200+ peeps so they make heaps of mess and its a constant battle! My room was clean and I stayed in an 8 bed dorm - after a week I had to take everything downstairs cause it was being "deep cleaned" which was a pain - but cont complain about cleaning. There is a free breakfast which is basic - coffee & toast and sugary cereal but thats ok :). Location is great all walking distance to town centre. So given price I was totally happy with hostel and wld stay again.
Elephant Backpacker was super close to everything. The shops, restaurants, food carts and metro. It is clean and you get breakfast, including coffee, cereal and cake. There are common rooms but most people kept to themselves. The manager was very kind and helpful and helped make arrangements for me while I packed my bags in a hurry to catch a train. He went out of their way to help me out.
Upon my arrival I could tell this place was a dump, the front door window was shattered and it smelt disgusting. They had questionable guys 'running' the place throughout the day. After I got my sheets which looked like they picked up off the streets I got up to my room which looked like an old crime scene with 5 people living in it. Not only did it smell awful but there were still dirty sheets on the bed I was supposed to sleep in. The bathrooms were unbearable as they smelt like urine, never had toilet paper, urine coated seats, and only two working showers. When I checked out the two guys at the front told me they didn't have the money to pay me back my deposit... I had a flight to catch so I didn't have time to wait for them to figure that out. I took one of their numbers and they promised me that management would call me the next day with information on refunding me my deposit. I never got a call. Still haven't got a call. I tried calling the number given to me but my number was blocked. I tried calling the hostel numerous times and never got an answer. I even left an enquiry on their website, and they just responded that they want my credit card information. When I refused to give it to them I got no response back. Needless to say I still haven't gotten my deposit back. If you're in Sydney, PLEASE, do not stay at this place. Who knows what they're doing with your money or the copy of your passports!!!!
My boyfriend and I arrived at this hostel at around 10pm to find it looking like a crack den/halfway home. After being given our room key from the most unenthusiastic receptionist ever, it did not work. We went to get it sorted and once we did get into the room all the beds were taken. We went downstairs again to sort it. After 'sorting' it out, we then open the room to find the bed still taken and it absolutely stinking of cigarette smoke. At this point we decided we didn't want to stay here as it was generally a mess both logistically and physically. After telling the receptionist this and asking for our money back, he had no idea how to deal with this so got the 'manager' who was the rudest, most arrogant boy we've come across. He was defensive and dismissive of our claims. After telling him it stank of smoke he asked if people had been smoking despite us being surrounded by the people who were in the room which put us in an awkward position as they had obviously been smoking. He went to check the room and came back claiming it smelled of perfume (obviously the men staying in there quickly sprayed it). He made out that we were being fussy as it is just a hostel. We have stayed in many hostels across 30 countries and this is by a mile the worst we've ever seen. We asked for the owner's number because the manager was not willing to help, instead only arguing with us. He refused to give the owner's number and suggested we come back tomorrow. We came back the next four days. The first three, no one was there to deal with it and the last we finally got a refund after explaining that it was not a cancellation but a refund due to the accommodation being absolutely nothing like it is pictured or described. I cannot stress how run down and awful this place looked. The atmosphere was horrible (felt like a homeless/drug shelter), the people were horrible and the experience as a whole was horrible, leaving us walking around at 10:30pm trying to find somewhere else to stay. Do not stay here!!
Unfriendly service, some of the staff were stoned at the reception desk, bed sheets from previous people left on the beds which had BLOOD stains, wet stain marks, pubic hairs on sheets. Had to go downstairs to get so called "fresh" sheets which did not seem at all washed and cleaned. Bed mattress was like sleeping on springs, bed squeaked every time you moved, cement rubble in the shared bathroom, no "male or female" sign on the showers, no soap dispenser or towelettes. Some rooms had a cardboard as a door, floor tiles had huge chips which you could easily trip over. The health department really needs to investigate this disgusting hostel !!!!
Great place! This is a classic hostel, situated in an old building. Because of that, the toilets and showers aren't brand new, the paint isn't fresh white, and the carpets aren't immaculate. However, everything else was basically good! I paid an amazing price for a private room which was a double bed and a clean room, and a good location on the east side of town. Breakfast is just cereal and toast. But for the price is a great deal.
