Elephant Backpacker Sydney - Hostel2.5 out of 5.0

Centrally located and easy to access by public transport. Affordable prices and friendly staff. The common areas are not clean. And use of bathrooms is a real problem as there's only one available at every floor.
The Hostel has no functional facilities. It seems that it is going to shut down and they just try to survive and the consequences are to get one Bed but nothing better. rooms: no heater, no stabil beds, night lights to read a book, windows are quiet unisolated, some rooms have no doors. bathroom: the walls lools like silent Hill thriller, mould, everything seems old, rostyf, but the water is really constantly warm for an nice shower kitchen: defects gas flames, all surfaces cleaned with window cleaner, no soap or kitchen cleaner, old pans old chopping bards, the kitchen looks like a apocalyptic zone. broken window on the side, dirty disgusting surfaces. hostel stuff: some are really nice, some are dump, and some are just like I do not care because the Hostel goes to hell There is no Wifi on all stages, just on the groun floor. Toilets: You can use the toilet, but not the sink to wash our hands. If you want to wash your hands, go to the bathroom. Just Unisex toillets and some are really gossip zones. it is my 9th Hostel in Australia, it is a shame to offer people this kind of service.
Me and my friend booked here for one night after a flight as it was the cheapest place that came up . We have stayed in many hostels and this was by far the dirtiest / smelliest place we have ever seen. Even Thailand was cleaner . Staff weren't welcoming . The toilets made me gag they where all falling apart and never seemed to be flushed or cleaned by the look of it . Wouldn't recommend to any one.
Dirty barthrooms, dirty shower, dirty hall ways, dirty room, beds semi clean, unfriendly staff (and I'm easy to please actually) at all times, noisy street. Rooms and hostel is unlocked all day/night so anyone can walk in. Not so safe. "Dirty frat house" said another review. I agree. Much much nicer is Originals Backpackers that I stay in now: very clean, just 2 in a room of 4 for a week, super friendly staff, good atmosphere...
We booked a private room at Elephant backpackers for next weekend. However, after reading some terrible reviews, we decided not to ruin our weekend by staying here. We have emailed 5 times and had no replies to the emails. We have phoned around 10 times, costing us lots, to try and cancel the booking, but the only successful phone call was to say that our booking had been cancelled and the refund had been made, BUT WE HAVE RECEIVED NO MONEY! So overall we haven't even stayed here and our experience with them is terrible.
I understand if it was just the room that i was placed in, but this was by far the dirtiest hostel room i have ever seen in my life. When we walked in, it not only reeked of body sweat, but there was trash, half eaten food, plates and stains everywhere. One of the beds we needed for the night was full of old dirty t-shirts and someones raggedy blanket. The beds had (food? sweat?) stains on them. The room had been occupied by four construction workers who had been staying there for several weeks. Im almost positive the tenants looked through my bad when i was out of the room (i had taken a picture of its position before leaving for an hour, it was vastly different upon my return)... me and the girl i was in Sydney with felt extremely uncomfortable here... after the rude night time front receptionist insisted there was no more rooms, we felt forced to purchase another hostel for the nights we were there, getting no refund and flushing our money already paid down the toilet. Under NO circumstances do i think that room was acceptable to give to ANYONE, especially two teenage girls in a room of grown dirty men. The conditions were worse than disgusting and the night time front desk man was less than helpful. Thankfully, after already getting a new hostel, and upon returning to 'elephant backpackers' in the morning, the manager was beyond apologetic and stated that the conditions were not acceptable for us to be in (we were happy to hear he was concerned over his employee). Now, i can imagine it was the room that made this experience so unbearable.. the location is unbeatable and the price i just right... next time (if there is a next time, and i have no other option) i will definitely be paying more for a private room. Mixed rooms are no place for a lady.
my friend and I stayed in a 6 person mixed room that was unlivable. there was garbage and food everywhere and when we tried to talk to the front desk worker he was no help at all. we ended up having to cancel our room it was so bad
I stayed here for a few nights when I first arrived in Sydney. This place is great - there are rules about noise and drinking, guests, etc, which I LOVED as I was working full time and sleep is important! This place is a large hostel but is relatively clean given the number of the guests but it is very quiet particularly at night. Could recommend it to anyone.... It has wifi on ground floor - which cld be faster but Australian internet in general is not that fast! Staff were friendly enough and tried to assist.
The manager I forgot his name but I think it's lanu or Lani is the worst person to manager this place! I throughly enjoyed my stay here but unfortunately the manger was terrible he mixed pleasure with work. Terrible guy who is only there to get sponsored always complaining how tired he is and very rude when you approach reception. Get rid of him.
As soon as I booked this hostel I started to have doubts after reading some of the reviews. After staying at the Elephant I want to advocate for it as I think some people who write these reviews need to consider what they were booking or thought it should be hotel standard. It’s a hostel and as such only expect hostel standards – don’t expect it to be 5 star hotel. Its going to be full of different people – some stay longer, some families and they young and old! As with hostels the world over don’t expect the staff to be permanent. It’s the luck of the draw who is working at the time of your stay. Some may have a lot of knowledge and some are just new! Having said that I found my stay to be very good. The rooms were up to my expectation (clean linen and comfortable), the wifi was restricted to the ground floor but worked and was free, breakfast was provided (just toast and cereal) and served in their little café by staff, staff were always helpful and the location was great (only a few minutes walk into the city). Bathrooms and toilets were old but clean and showers were hot! I would definitely come back.
