Staff courteous but busy; understandable due to Christmas events. Room’s over bed lights - only one was working. Wondered if it was just a loose tube etc so had a look behind the shade. It was very dusty and obviously not featured in weekly or monthly cleaning schedule. We had a tight schedule visiting friends and family in the area and came back to hotel to relax between visits and would have liked more tea bags for our number of nights stay v number of guests; especially when housekeeping is a choice for guests. When we did ask at reception for extra they were happy to give but said “I’ll give you one each” and we had to request double that !

My single room was basic but had everything that i needed. It was spotlessly clean and had all the things i required such as hairdryer and tea and coffee making facilities. The staff were vere pleasant and helpful and i found the bar area very relaxing. I would recommend the Alma Lodge and would stay again.

This hotel far exceeded my expectations. I paid £55 for a night's bed and breakfast on a Saturday (the Travelodge nearby was £150 room only!). The common areas (reception and bar) were very nicely decorated / furnished and felt more like a higher priced hotel. The room was nicely done with well thought out lighting / socket placement, very fresh smelling bedding and it was exceptionally (spotlessly!) clean. Breakfast was very good (tinned fruit being the only giveaway this was a budget hotel), great selection for a full English with quality ingredients, fresh pastries. All the staff were lovely, very friendly and helpful. I would definitely stay here again if in the area, it would be my first choice.

Entry and exit to the hotel was rather off-putting as it involved running the gauntlet of those smoking under the entrance portico. I think that some of them might have been staff members, so perhaps someone should have a quiet word to get them to smoke elsewhere. Not sure what you can do to get guests to keep away from the entrance, though.
