The heater made crazy noises all night. The towels were tattered and worn. The double bed was on a queen frame and I kept buying my legs on it.

Very nice. Close to campus. The staff is very helpful. Pleased that they had a roll away bed to accommodate another person.

First time staying at The Atherton and was pleasantly surprised. The hotel was older and maintained a bit of old charm and elegance that the newer chains don't have. It was nice and clean and the room was spacious and comfortable. Staff were very nice and helpful. Would stay again.

All staff were friendly and polite. Hotel was very clean and comfortable. Very good meals (breakfasts) in the restaurant.

You can't beat the location, 10 min walk from Rec Hall, 13 min to book store. This is an old hotel, 3 elevators nice number, but very slow. Parking is mixed, if you get there late they may be out of spots, but we got there early and didn't have any issues and they had plenty of spots on saturday AM.

Hotel is located close to Penn State campus and downtown State College. Hotel is dated, but in the process of renovation.

The front desk help was stuffy and a bit condescending. Unustifiably considering the hotel. The bedding wasn't all clean. The light in the room entry wasn't working so I walked into a dark room grasping for a light source. The shower was old and not entirely clean. They charge for parking, which I understand, but it was never mentioned upon check in that there would be a cost for parking. Overall slightly below avg.

Can't beat the location, it's just off the southwest corner of the Penn State campus and a short walk away from everything downtown has to offer. Rooms are big, staff is very friendly, you can park in an underground garage ($8 a night), wifi was fast and free, and there's a restaurant and casual bar onsite. However, the place is starting to get run down. This was once the nicest hotel in State College (and it's still one of the most expensive), but it needs upgrading. There were no glaring problems, but instead lots of little ones. The ice machine on my floor didn't work. I had to jiggle the handle on the toilet on several occasions to keep it from running. The drain plug in the bathtub was loose. One of the lamps in the room didn't work. The easy chair smelled funny. One of the towels was raggedy. The elevators have seen better days. All in all, I would still recommend it, but not with the same enthusiasm that I used to.

The Atherton Hotel is right out of the nineties, around the time it was first built. I stayed there then, and the decor hasn't changed much since. That said, it has been well-maintained, kept clean, and has a friendly efficient staff. The location can't be beat, has reasonable parking, and a restaurant/bar on location. Great for football weekends.

My friend came by for a trip around campus here in state college and she was shocked by how nice the rooms are relative to the low price. The hotel is located in downtown state college and thus it is easy for me to take her both around campus and around downtown. The only dissatisfaction was that the rooms are not equipped with fridge and microwave. After all, I would definitely recommend this hotel to other people.

So convenient, great hotel ...modern yet with a fun vintage feel

Very nice Hotel and close to it all. I have stayed here a few times and would do so again.

If you're looking for a place to stay in downtown State College, the Atherton Hotel is pretty much your best bet. The hotel is clean, comfortable and staff friendly. It's located just along College Avenue and is in easy walking distance of any campus sites or State College nightlife that you're looking for.

we had a great experience at the atherton. location is ideal for eating shopping and going to the downtown bars. staff is friendly and helpful. fun environment . the hotel rooms need to have some more upgrades. wallpaper is stained and old furniture

Staff was nice and location excellent but other than that the place is a dump. Dirty carpets, mold on ceiling and poor TV reception.

This was my 5th stay at the Arherton. What I like the most about this place is it's proximity to town. You can walk to the many restaurants, bars and shops. Campus is right across the street. The room are spacious ( this room had a king bed and a sleeper couch) and clean. It would be nice if they had a mini fridge in the rooms. There is a nice little restaurant /bar in the hotel. This was a good place to get a cold beer after a long, hot day of Arts Fest.

I stay at the Atherton while visiting my daughter at PSU. The location is perfect -- within walking distance to restaurants, bars and the whole Penn State community. The rooms are clean. the heating/air is great. The staff in their dining room helped me pull off a surprise 21st birthday for my daughter, Bree, arranging extra gift tables, and even taking photos and singing happy birthday. Front desk clerks are always helpful and friendly. Chrisann Militello

Food was great. Prices on Friday in the bar can't be beat. Can't get any closer to anything

the Lobby is gorgeous and the rooms have a very old colonial feel! Our first room had a pair of dirty socks in it and towels weren't folded, we called the front desk assuming that the maid service just hadnt finished in the room yet. The manager then came up an upgraded us to the Deluxe Jacuzzi Suite! we were very surprised, as we were expecting someone to just come up and finish cleaning the room we were in! The staff was very attentive and wonderful! We will be back for all of our visits to state college!

The staff are dressed to impress. Great lounge and bar in the lobby. Ample parking. Overall had an amazing time there and will defiantly come back
