Things to see and do
River Street
River Street is a popular promenade that overlooks the Savannah River. The lively cobblestone street features luxurious hotels, famous restaurants, local pubs and quirky boutiques. Other attractions include street artists, musicians and boat rides. You can also observe huge international ships coming into the busy port.
Historic District
The city's Historic District is a fascinating glimpse into the past with outstanding examples of 18th and 19th century buildings. You’ll find a network of 20 squares containing imposing monuments, gardens, fountains, statues, playgrounds and park benches. The district also contains several historic homes and religious structures, including the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, the First African Baptist Church and the Temple Mickve Israel. The Historic District is home to many popular local restaurants, coffee shops and souvenir stores.
Bonaventure Cemetery
Established in 1846, Bonaventure Cemetery is the city's oldest cemetery. The atmospheric burial ground gained national fame as one of the locations in the 1997 film Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Bonaventure is known for its unique tombs and the natural beauty of the landscape.
Forts
As Georgia's first city, Savannah has served as a strategic military location in times of conflict and peace. Fort Pulaski, Old Fort Jackson and Fort McAllister are located in and around Savannah, and can be visited for tales of local sieges and tours of the battlements.
Tybee Island
Tybee Island is 20 minutes from the heart of Savannah. Swimming, fishing, boating and biking are popular activities on the picturesque island. Other attractions include the Tybee Island Lighthouse, dolphin tours, the Tybee Pier and Pavilion and the Tybee Marine Science Center.
Where to stay
Historic District
Many of the most popular Savannah hotels are located in the Historic District. Some of the luxurious hotels and inns reside in famous historic structures. A hotel at the heart of the Historic District is within walking distance of River Street, the beautiful squares and parks, the Juliette Gordon Low House and many other attractions.
Downtown
The Downtown area surrounds the Historic District. Hotels in this area will be slightly less expensive than the accommodations in the heart of the Historic District, and visitors can easily walk to many of the attractions in the Historic District.
Tybee Island
If most of your travel plans revolve around the beach, a Tybee Island hotel can offer convenient accommodations. Some hotels even offer direct beach access and balconies that overlook the Atlantic.
Southside
Southside Savannah is home to malls, neighborhoods, businesses and other institutions. If you are not planning to spend a great deal of time in the Downtown area or the Historic District, you'll save money by staying on the Southside. You can still easily travel to the Historic District, Tybee Island and other attractions by car or taxi.
Travel information
The Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (SAV) serves the city of Savannah, sitting seven miles from the city's boundary. Visitors can reach the airport by traveling north on Interstate 95. A dozen hotels offer accommodations near the airport. Chain hotels include Great Western, Hyatt Regency and Holiday Inn.
Best time to stay
Savannah hosts festivals and other events throughout the year. The extensive St. Patrick's Day celebrations and the Savannah Music Festival occur in March. Both festivals are very popular, so finding March accommodations can be difficult and relatively expensive. Hotels on the Southside will be less pricey.
Savannah experiences relatively mild temperatures throughout most of the year. The spring temperatures between March and June are accompanied by beautiful flowers and lively greenery. The late summer months can be humid, and the early months of the year are cool, with temperatures rarely dropping below the 40s. Hotel rates tend to be lower during the colder months, making it an ideal time to visit.
